Milky Way Lyrics

What'd you ever say today when you're in the milky way
oh tell me please
-just to give you a squeeze
if I met you - I told you what to do
seems a while
since I could smile the way you do...

how many times, if I try, if I may,
when you're in the milky way
half of your time -beside me only atmosphere
- the singular raised by heats and wet seems a while
since I could smile the way you do...

What can anyone mean to you
standing in the milky way
take life easy
- I mean so easy
Why so empty...?
I told you - I can tell you
what to do - when I hold you
and I tell you "I love you"
I feel that I'm way you do...

Give a grasp of life today
when you're in the milky way
oh, try to please! Knock on wood of the trees
glad you, mould you, mould you and hold you
means five miles
and everyway for you...

Cover art for Milky Way lyrics by Syd Barrett

basically, he's talking about how people who are happy forget about the people who are sad... not necessarily materially happy, but of sound mind... as in Syd's case everything kind of relates to his mental problems..

I don't think Syd had mental problems at all, only communication problems - or rather other people had understanding problems. The surface & the shallow cannot conceive of the deep.

By the way, is sound mind the same as right thinking?

And it's "Give a gasp of life today" - sleep apnea. Milky Way is about being asleep and searching for your loved one in the quantum sea. Simple, simple.

"Means five miles and everyway for you". What does that line mean?

Cover art for Milky Way lyrics by Syd Barrett

"means five miles and everyway for you" is about what music means to us. He is showing you that you expect the song to be a personal thing that relates to you and has meaning specificlly tailored to you, but the milky way is a huge place, and nothing is related to you unless you take it as such. That's what i got from this song, but yeah i wa on acid when that came to my mind. Syd was lonely in the milky way and he remembers the days when he was able to smile, be happy. Its an expression of his depression with reality, and he got to obsessive thinking beyond the simple human issues, like the loneliness and lack of reasoning in the universe.

syd definitely had mental problems, he was diagnosed with schizophrenia...thats a mental disorder. all the lsd essentially melted his brain.
