Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
I never knew my father
I never knew his pain
Or that an empty home life
Would break him down again
So when I feel like running I have to look inside
I want to find the answer
I want to break my line
Fear falls down like rain
And it makes me whole again
Fear falls like rain
Take me as I am
I'm not broken
Pieces of my life are not tokens
I want to let you know that I'm still learning
How to love again and stop hurting
I want to roll my darkness into a million suns
I need to find forgiveness when all the pain is done
I want to hear I'm sorry, I want to let you go
I have to find my own life, I want to learn to grow
Fear falls down like rain
And it makes me whole again
Fear falls like rain
Take me as I am
I'm not broken
Pieces of my life are not tokens
I want to let you know that I'm still learning
How to love again and stop hurting
It makes me whole again
Take me as I am
I'm not broken
Pieces of my life are not tokens
I want to let you know that I'm still learning
How to love again and stop hurting
I never knew his pain
Or that an empty home life
Would break him down again
So when I feel like running I have to look inside
I want to find the answer
I want to break my line
Fear falls down like rain
And it makes me whole again
Fear falls like rain
Take me as I am
I'm not broken
Pieces of my life are not tokens
I want to let you know that I'm still learning
How to love again and stop hurting
I want to roll my darkness into a million suns
I need to find forgiveness when all the pain is done
I want to hear I'm sorry, I want to let you go
I have to find my own life, I want to learn to grow
Fear falls down like rain
And it makes me whole again
Fear falls like rain
Take me as I am
I'm not broken
Pieces of my life are not tokens
I want to let you know that I'm still learning
How to love again and stop hurting
It makes me whole again
Take me as I am
I'm not broken
Pieces of my life are not tokens
I want to let you know that I'm still learning
How to love again and stop hurting

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example:
"'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Blue
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
this is and awesome song and i think its kinda saying that because of his last love dumping him that he is feeling like a pawn and that he is trying to find someone to make his returned lonelyness disappear and thats the love he is searching for ......but hey thats just my thoughts for it im prolly wrong though
I think the correct lyric is
"I wanna let you know I'm still learning how to love again and stop hurting"
I first thought it was lonely too, but it kinda doesn't make much since...
I think that this song is about moving on with your life after something bad almost breaks you. I heard it on the radio the night my gf left me and i won't say that i felt better but it really helped to put things in perspective for me. I think these guys are a very talented band and this is my new favorite song by them. In my opinion this song isn't meant to be depressing, just the opposite, it gives hope that there will be calm after the storm.
I'm not the biggest fan of their newer stuff, but this is one of the better songs on the album.
I think he's basically trying to get the point across that people need to like him for who he is, and that he still wants to be loved again.
He is talking about his father, not a girl. He never met his real father or his father left the family after he was born and he's talking about how he has grown a custom to being alone and handling things on his own but he still wants to know his father and wants him in his life and wants an apology/explanation. Analize the song line by line and it is easier to understand. I would also like to add that the chorus needs a correction which is "I want to let you know that I'm still learning, how to love again and stop hurting."
this song is a goor interpretation of my life. the girl i really like, and who said that she liked me, decided that she wasnt so sure about us anymore. this came about after my ex led me on at prom, and now im just trying to move on and find someone to make this new-found lonlliness dissapear.
according to a killer i knew, the fears of the father are transferred to the son...so this song represents us being seen in the image of our parents..but we ask the person we love to take us as we are, regardless if our parents are psycho-killers or drag queens, because we are an entirely different entity thatn they are...
I think in this song he's talking to the woman he's either broken up with, or is just starting a new relationship with, and he is referring to a healing process he is going through, addressing his relationship with his father. It sounds like his girlfriend has been trying to fix him, which is why he says "take me as I am, I'm not broken". This situation is one that almost any guy who's dated a woman can relate to. When he says "pieces of my life are not tokens" , he means that the person he is cannot be taken apart and replaced piece by piece, like so many tokens. Each part is valuable and represents some part of his past, and as such, cannot be removed from who he is at present. "I wanna let you know I'm still learning how to love again, and stop hurting" - is his explanation to the girl for why he needs time and patience as he works through the pains of his past.
It's definitely about a father that wasn't a part of Emerson Hart's life. Compared to the rest of the album, it's a very well written song.
I can see how you could twist it to make it a break up song but the first verse wouldn't make a lot of sense.
Hart seems to have problems with his parents. "If You Could Only See" is about when his mother abandoned him when he got married.
I strongly relate to this song in terms of a Father-Son relationship. It hurts when you have a father, and yet lack the love only he can give...
I think this song describes a healing process. Sometimes when Im experiencing hard times, i try to look at the way my parents faced their troubles. It sucks when you dont have such a reference point to learn from. So instead of looking for answers from your father you:
"have to look inside" ['cause] "I want to find the answer" "I want to break my line"
