This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. This song is about the trappings of life (money), and how with it, both with it or without it, can effect or influence your decsions.
You have Rakim clearly anaylzing his life. Reflecting on what he would do to get money. Then his revelation of rightousness, and learning value, joy, and pride of earning an honest dollar. Utilizing Hip Hop as a vehicle to touch others. Then, Rakim mentions fish. This has a very deep meaning. "That the creeping things of the waters," or fishes, signify memory-knowledges, is plain from Isaiah:- Also, Fishes in the Word signify memory-knowledges, which spring from things of sense. For memory-knowledges (scientifica) are of three kinds: intellectual, rational, and sensuous. All these are planted in the memory, or rather memories, and in the regenerate man are called forth thence by the Lord, through the internal man. These memory-knowledges which are from things of sense come to man's sensation or perception when he lives in the body, for he thinks from them. The rest, which are interior, do not come so much to perception until man puts off the body and enters the other life. That fishes or the creeping things which the waters produce, signify memory-knowledges, may be seen above (AC 40); and that a whale or sea monster signifies the generals of these knowledges.

This song is all about being on the grind and just trying to survive in the concrete jungle. Eric B. & Rakim are trying to balance their careers, finances and personal lives, we all can relate.
One thing that I love about these guys is that they're referred to as Eric B. & Rakim, both are credited. The arrogant rappers of today's mainstream never credit the people that produce their songs and make the beats they get famous off of.
E dominates the last couple of minutes of this track.
