If I laid down my love to come to your defense
Would you worry for me with a pain in your chest?
Could I rely on your faith to be strong
To pick me back up and to push me along?
Tell me

You'll be there in my hour of need
You won't turn me away
Help me out of the life I lead
Remember the promise you made
Remember the promise you made

If I gave you my soul for a piece of your mind
Would you carry me with you to the far edge of time?
Could you understand if you found me untrue
Would we become one, or divided in two
Please tell me

You'll be there in my hour of need
You won't turn me away
Help me out of the life I lead
Remember the promise you made
Remember the promise you made

Could I rely on your faith to be strong
To pick me back up and to push me along
Please tell me

You'll be there in my hour of need
You won't turn me away
Help me out of the life I lead
Remember the promise you made
Remember the promise you made

Remember the promise you made
Remember the promise you made

Beautifull song. Even after all these years....

What!!!??? No comment at all for this testament to love? Probably one of the best "love songs" I've heard, with a great combination of lyrics, music and specially delivery... Not particulary excelling in any one of those, it reaches a great balance between them.

Sometimes, when you utter 'I'll love you forever' you're not just giving a compliment; you're just stating a fact, for better or for worse.

    My Interpretation

To me the lyrics are quite ambiguous. Who has made what promise to whom?

As in real life, we make a number of “promises”, some which we decide to keep and some we decide are unimportant or no longer relevant.

At face value the promise is to be there in someone’s hour of need. And why does the singer feel the need to remind the person to whom the song is sung of the promise, other than the fear that the promise won’t be kept?

The singer wants to be rescued from the life he/she leads - and seems desperate to convince the other person to keep the promise to rescue them. This desperation hints that the other person is reluctant. A rash promise? Does the other person fear rather than “lifting up” the singer”, they will end up being dragged down to that level?

The verse sung by Anna LaCazio in particular is open to a number of interpretations. She talks about “giving her soul” and being “found untrue”. Is she asking her “lover” to save her from an unhappy marriage (“help me out of the life I lead”)? Has her lover promised her to do that? And when Peter Kingsbery sings back “remember the promise you made”, is that a reference to her marriage vows - and is he singing that line in the role of the lover or the soon to be jilted husband?

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
