In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
I've stood upon my mountaintop
And shouted at the sky
Walked above the pavement with my senses amplified
I get this feeling
All my nerves are naked wires tender to the touch
Sometimes super-sensitive
But who can care too much?
I get this feeling
Scars of pleasure
Scars of pain
Atmospheric changes
Make them sensitive again
Scars of pleasure
Scars of pain
Atmospheric changes
Make them sensitive again
Each emotional injury
Leaves behind its mark
Sometimes they come tumbling out
Like shadows in the dark
I get this feeling
When I think about all I have seen
And all I'll never see
When I think about the people
Who have opened up to me
I get this feeling
Scars of pleasure
Scars of pain
Atmospheric changes
Make them sensitive again
Scars of pleasure
Scars of pain
Atmospheric changes
Make them sensitive again
Snow falls deep around my house
And holds the winter light
I've heard the lions hunting
In the Serengeti night
I get this feeling
Forests turned to factories
And river, sea, and sky
Hungry child in the desert
And the flies that cloud her eyes
I get this feeling
Scars of pleasure
Scars of pain
Atmospheric changes
Make them sensitive again
Scars of pleasure
Scars of pain
Atmospheric changes
Make them sensitive again
Scars of pleasure
Scars of pain
Atmospheric changes
Make them sensitive again
Scars of pleasure
Scars of pain
Atmospheric changes
Make them sensitive again
Pleasure leaves a fingerprint as surely as mortal pain
In memories they resonate and echo back again
Scars of pleasure
Scars of pain
Atmospheric changes
Make them sensitive again
Scars of pleasure
Scars of pain
Atmospheric changes
Make them sensitive again
Scars of pleasure
Scars of pain
Atmospheric changes
Make them sensitive again

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
Magical
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
To me this song is about dealing with past occurrences that come back to haunt us in life. Sometimes I find that I am reminded of certain events from my own past just because of something like the weather, or an image that I'll come across, effects that happen when you have seasonal affective disorder like I do. Having that said, take a look at the lines from the chorus: "Scars of pleasure, scars of pain, atmospheric changes make them sensitive again". That just makes me thing of those instances of nostalgia that often creep up upon us because of whatever environment we're in. Interestingly enough, Neil references the song in the book Ghost Rider. At the beginning of each chapter, he always quotes his own lyrics right under the title, and in a chapter titled "Seasonal Affective Disorder" he quotes this song's chorus. Just an interesting thought.
Regardless of what it means, I love this song. It has such a catchy rhythmic feel to it, coupled with the space provided from Alex's guitars that adds so many layers to it.
