The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

I like this song because as a Christian I've had to deal a lot with the "chains of yesterday". I've messed up a lot in the past, and I feel like I pay the consequences for it all the time. But that's why God's grace is so awesome. Because I could never do anything to deserve that much love. I'm the least worthy person on the planet for redemption, but it's not about being worthy. that's what's so awesome. while we were still sinners, Jesus loved us so much that He would die for us. He died for everyone. Even those people that spit His name out on the sidewalk... there's no reason or explanation in it except that it's by total grace that we've been saved. I can't NOT have reverence for that. And I'll keep living for the day that I'm with Him.

i think this song is a view from a man who is looking back on a past relationship and wishing that they could give it another go. He is saying that if u take away the chains of yesterday (the problems that caused them to break up) then he would be more than willing to give it another go. He is saying in the chorus that since they've been apart all he's been trying to do is get back together because he has still got feelings for this girl even though they had problems which cause them to split up in the first place. This has got to be Lifehouse's best song.
They should sent this as a single. It would blown up on radio, and been a huge hit. Instead they released Spin and this album failed commercially.
