When I was young, it seemed that life
was so wonderful,a miracle,
oh it was beautiful, magical.
And all the birds in the trees,
well they'd be singing so happily,
oh, joyfully, oh, playfully watching me.

But then they sent me away,
to teach me how to be sensible,
logical oh, responsible practical.
And they showed me a world
where I could be so dependable,
oh, clinical, oh, intellectual, cynical.

There are times when all the world's asleep,
the questions run too deep for such a simple man
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned?
I know it sounds absurd. Please tell me who I am

I said, now watch what you say or
they'll be calling you a radical,
a liberal, oh fanatical, criminal.
Oh, won't you sign up your name,
we'd like to feel you're acceptable,
respectable, oh, presentable, a vegetable!

At night, when all the world's asleep...

Please tell me who I am who I am who I am who I am

General CommentIt sounds as though the singer is making the common Thoreau message of "simplify, simplify." A free spirit should be kept sacred above all else, despite society's urge to crush it. After having his spirit violated so, the speaker appears to have lost his identity, as indicated by the final line, "Please tell me who I am." For by allowing others to shape him, he has forgotten who he once was.

General CommentIt's a song about Unequivocal Liberty.

Rather than being free to be ones own self, society feels the need to mold you into what is acceptable, presentable, etc. just as the song says.

If you go outside their boundaries, you are labeled as something undesirable, deranged, criminal.

The song then transpires that he was once free and happy, but when they sent him away to make him "normal," so that he would be presentable to society, to brainwash the same as if it were a cult, he forgot who he was, and how to get there again.

That's where the last line comes in, asking for someone to tell him who he is, as that's what so many years of his life were based on, being told who/what/why and not finding his own way... He wants to be human again.

General CommentSocial outcasts have always been known to be the bearers' of Truth.

This sounds like a first-person account of how it feels to be a "Holy man, rocker man, come on queenie,
Joker man, spider man, blue eyed meanie" a la Fool's Overture.

As illustrated there, the band is singing on behalf of the Fool, Yhwh.com... an excerpt:

In Shakespeare's "King Lear", the only one who will tell the king what is really going on is the Fool. The Bible itself tells us that the wisdom of God is foolishness to this world, and we see that the story is complete. Within each of us, the Fool lives. The Fool is that spark, the highest reality of God before he was manifested into the universe, before he created the universe. And, that wisdom abides within us all. The pathways of the Fool are those stages we go through as we move from our normal mortal life into the marriage with God.
