"Run On" as written by and Richard Melville Hall....
Lord God Almighty let me tell the news
My head got wet in midnight dew
Great God I been down on my bended knees
Talking to a man from galilee
Michael spoke and he sound so sweet
I thought I heard the shuffle of angels' feet
He put one hand upon my head
Great God Almighty let me tell you what He said

Go tell that lonesome liar
Go tell that midnight rider
Tell the gamblin' ramblin' backslider
Tell them God Almighty gonna cut 'em down

You might run on for a long time
Run on, ducking and dodging
Run on, children, for a long time
Let me tell you God Almighty gonna cut you down

You might throw your rock, hide your head
Work in the dark with your fellow men
Sure as God made you rich and poor
You're gonna reap just what you sow

[Chorus: x3]
Some people go to church just to signify
Trying to make a date with a neighbor's wife
Brother let me tell you just as sure as you're born
You better leave that woman alone

[Chorus: x8]

General CommentThe vocals were sampled from a recording of a gospel-blues a capella group from the 1940s - Moby just added the instrumentation. He is very open about this process, giving full credit to the original artists on his albums.

General CommentThis song is kind of weird. I love the way it sounds, but the lyrics kind of creep me out... it seems weird that Moby of all people would be talking about how God is going to "Cut down" sinners. I know it's not him personaly, but he did put it on his album, and somehow I'm a tad disturbed.

    Oh well.

General CommentThe song's really called "God's Gonna Cut You Down," not "Run On." And Johnny Cash's version kick's the pasty white ass of Moby's version.

General CommentI like this version of the song, but I have to agree: Johnny Cashs' version is superior.

IIRC, Elvis did a version of this song as well.

General CommentI agree with the people stating that Johnny Cash's version is superior, heh.
This version almost makes me think of a barbershop quartet...with electronics? Hm...

General CommentMy interpretation of this song, even though it is a great remix made by Moby, is that if you do anything evil that you might as well live the rest of your life as much as you can because God is going to take you out.

Seeing as how I don't believe in God or any other higher power for that matter, I just think that Karma is going to seek its way to you, and punish you for whatever wrong doing you did.
