What Do You Want from Me Lyrics

As you look around this room tonight
Settle in your seat and dim the lights
Do you want my blood, do you want my tears?
What do you want?
(What do you want from me?)
Should I sing until I can't sing anymore?
Play these strings until my fingers are raw
You're so hard to please
What do you want from me?

Do you think that I know something you don't know?
(What do you want from me?)
If I don't promise you the answers, would you go?
(What do you want from me?)
Should I stand out in the rain?
Do you want me to make a daisy chain for you?
I'm not the one you need
What do you want from me?

You can have anything you want
You can drift, you can dream, even walk on water
Anything you want

You can own everything you see
Sell your soul for complete control
Is that really what you need?

You can lose yourself this night
See inside, there is nothing to hide
Turn and face the light

What do you want from me?

For me, this song is about God. This is not the regular religious god. This is more personal god. The singer is talking about someone who makes is life miserable. He talks to someone strong, very strong, that according to him, hurted him and he, sitting down there, don't even realize what he, god, wants. You may wonder why god want him to sing and make daisy chain, But does those lyrics really talking about human?

"You can have everything you want" - You may say it on humans, but Its very true when you say it about god. "You can... even WALK ON WATER" - I believe this refers to Jesus walking on the water. There are no other connections that I can see for this sentence And there is also the sentence "I am not the one you need"- Who can possibly say this for is girlfriend or band mate?

Now let me explain the song with my interpetarion: The singer is in a room. Probably alone. he is hurt, and he is asking god why, because he believes that god is actively involved in what's happening to him. The singing and playing refers to the singer confusion. What is the singer's meaning in this world? Is he really supposed to keep playing and singing just like he does now? He is tired of this, and ask god if this is what he wants him to do, because as long as he can see it, his songs are his meaning in the world. "You are so hard to please" - he wants to please god but he keep getting hurt- therefore, something is wrong- he didn't please him yet despite his attempts.

Next part contain possible answers to the title question: -God wants him to learn\ discover something. He probably say the words "You Don't know" Ironicly, cause god knows everything and therefore has no need to toture him. Maybe he really believes in god that doesnt know anything.

  • God want him to give gift. I believe he refers to all religious acts that seem unreasonable.

He says "I am not the one need", therfore telling god to leave him alone. This might suggest that God is more connected to him than he is for other persons, whom he does leave alone.

"Sell you soul for complete control"- Clearly critisize god. In other words: by hurting me and taking my free choise, no matter what you reasons are, you are seizing to be the good god. Does it really worth it?

"You can lose yourself this night" - This is a threat, and it might look ireasonable to threat god but it also unreasonable to threat anyone else like that. therefore, it means, If you keep hurting me, I won't do what you want anyway. Can also refer to the last line interpetation.

"See inside there is nothing to hide"- Another sentence that strengthen my point. This is something that god can do. I other words: Look inside of me, you can see I am truthful and want to please you if you show me how.

"Come and face the light": Give me the answers I asked for. please.

ehh

"Play these strings until my fingers are blue"

its:

"Play these strings until my fingers are Raw"

anyway this a verry agressive pink floyd song when you hear the music. Direct after the slow and nice cluster one.. a hard drum and yellnig guitar noise.. great.. To me personal the song says something about someone. Who does thing for his of her partner but it's not enough for the other so.. this person starts asking what do you want me to do more then i already do..

It's based around an argument Gilmour had with Polly, yes but it also has alot of stuff in about Roger Waters.

"Should I sing until I can't sing any more. Play these strings 'till my fingers are raw." - Sounds like a reference to the final days of Waters reign

I used to never want to hear anything post-Waters but after hearing some songs from Division Bell on the Pulse dvd I got it and loved it. I still won't buy MLoR though. But just because Roger Waters is there doesn't mean that the music is crap, it is just different. Roger Waters was better (to me) than David Gilmour, but neither is bad.

@onthesuierside I'd go so far as to say they are both spectacular, in different ways. Waters speaks to your head, and Gilmour to your heart.
