I used to live in a room full of mirrors
All I could see was me
Then I take my spirit and I smash my mirrors
And now the whole world is here for me to see
Now I’m searching for my love to be

A broken glass was solvin’ my brain
Cut and screamin’ crowdin’ in my head
A broken glass was loud in my brain
It used to fall on my dreams and cut me in my bed
It used to fall on my dreams and cut me in my bed
I say making love was strange in my bed

This is one of my favorite hendrix songs. I love the way it metaphorically describes how self-centered we are, and that when we can stop being so self-centered, we gain the ability to percieve the beauty of everything around us.

There is a spoken version of this song on one of my many bootleg Hendrix tapes. The spoken version sounds very strange. He sounds like he is on acid or some other hallucinogenic drug. He says things like "somebody help me, somebody please help me" and "tell this idiot to get the hell out of me and get me the hell out of this god damned mirror room". This tape is very emotional and it seems like Hendrix is crying out for someone to help him. At one point he says "I turn to the world but what do they have to offer me but pats on the back". I recommend you get this tape and listen to it because it is very interesting.

This song set it off son,let me tell you. It's about Hendrix feeling trapped in his god-like status, and that he can't escape himself,or his mobster of a manager.

Nah, it's not about how self-centered we are. It's about ego death. It's about letting go of our mind projecting ourself out onto the world around us. If you are too wrapped up in your own sense of self, all you do is see your own ideas about things in the world around you; just like in Taoism, you see the manifestations instead of the mystery itself. Using LSD, it is much easier to let go of your own sense of self and realize that the idea of an individual "I" is just something made up by your own ego, that all of your emotions come from the same place (see bold as love). Once you let go of that, smashing the mirrors, you can really see the world for all that it truly is, without projecting yourself onto it. Just fully experiencing and sensing it finally, living in the moment at all times.

While the obvious connections with suicide or alcoholism could be drawn easily, more subtly this song could be about someone who views the world through a negative lens constantly and how as much as the writer tries to show the beauty in the world, this person refuses to see it. It's one or another between the rope and the bottle. There is no good option for this person. They can't see it. Skiba sings it in a kind of exasperated way like He's tired of hearing this negative view constantly and just allowing that person to continue feeling the way they feel knowing he can't do anything about it. You can hear it when he says maybe you're a vampire.

I think the meaning is pretty clear. This person got really burned in a previous relationship, and because of this is unable to love and show care in his present one, even though he so badly wants to. It's lovely song, and very sad. You can really feel how defeated and frustrated he is with himself.

Just listening for the 784,654th time....and it's just perfect in every way. Just incredible. The only reason it was remade was to scoop up a boatload of money from a more modern and accepting audience. But it is a completely different song than the other one that sounds slapped together in a few takes without a thought for the meaning. This song captivates me still, after 50+ years. Takes me to the deep South and the poverty of some who lived thru truly hard times. And the powerful spirit of a poor young girl being abandoned to her future with only a red dress and her wits to keep her alive. She not only stayed alive, she turned her hard beginnings around, became self sufficient, successful and someone with respect for herself. She didn't let the naysayers and judgers stop her. She's the one sitting in the drivers seat at the end. So, not a song about a poor girl, but a song of hope and how you can rise up no matter how far down you started. There is a huge difference between a singer who simply belts out a song that is on a page in front of them, and someone who can convey an entire experience with their voice. Telling not just a story with words, but taking you inside it and making you feel like you are there, with their interpretation.

@Kahiara Actually I think the husband passed away, "She sang for you last night She heard you were calling" Many people say they have felt, heard, or seen their loved ones after they have passed. "Don't be scared now Close your eyes She holds guard tonight Go on forward no remorse Life will take it's course" This is said to the late husband by a third part (never named), who encourages him to pass on. Because life will eventually continue. The phrase "holds guard" refers to the ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/… ) which is a Christian ceremony held after someone dies. Now it is usually held right after the funeral, but in most celtiic countries the wake is held before the funeral. "She danced with you last night so you will remember All you have shared, a lifetime." This sentence feels as if the only thing it wants to convey is their history together, namely, husband and wife. For the rest it just refers back to the first verse.
