This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
Visiting is pretty
Visiting is good
Seems that all they ever wanted was a brother
This can be a secret
We can keep it good
Even all they ever wanted had a problem
This is a call to all my
Past resignations
This is a call to all
Fingernails are pretty
Fingernails are good
Seems that all they ever wanted was a marking
Them balloons are pretty
Big and say they should
Ever fall to ground
Call the magic marker
This is a call to all my
Past resignations
This is a call to all
This is a call to all my
Past resignations
It's been too long
Minicyn is pretty
Minicyn is good
Seems that all the cysts and mollusks tend to barter
Ritalin is easy
Ritalin is good
Even all the ones that watered down the daughter
This is a call to all my
Past resignations
This is a call to all
This is a call to all my
Past resignations
It's been too long
Fingernails are pretty
Fingernails are good

I Can't Go To Sleep

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.
No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
Blue
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
Dave Grohl said about the song: "The chorus says 'This is a call to all my past resignation'. It's just sort of like a little wave to all the people I ever played music with, people I've been friends with, all my relationships, my family. It's a hello, and in a way a thank you."
More likely than not it's just a list of inside jokes.
@HMBeast
Loved your comment ... such a relief to find someone else out there who doesn't pretend to know it all ...
search "minicyn" on Google.com or Dictionary.com and both will ask you if you meant to type "minocyn" which is a shortening of minocycline or tetracycline, both antibiotic drugs. Both of those medications are sometimes given to (attempt to) treat acne. Unless I am greatly mistaken, Grohl was a sufferer of acne, and he might be referring to that. (A cyst is a more painful version of a pimple. Mollusks, a.k.a. snails, are slow. "The cysts and mollusks tend to barter" = the cysts stay around until they get traded away and are gone, but the trades are being performed with the molusks, so the cysts stay for a really long time and are ugly and painful and embarrassing.)
It's about being a teenager. Secretly visiting a lonely girlfriend ("Seems that all they ever wanted was a brother") with big balloons and long fingernails.
Minicyn (for acne) and Ritalin (for focus) are common meds used by teenagers.
And he's just trying to get over that awkward phase because it's was a long time ago.
This is probably just a random song that Dave wrote as a creative outlet once Nirvana was no more (sob)
@rock_bunny believe he wrote most the songs off the Foo Fighters first album when he still was with Nirvana ... although I have read that a few (including this one) were written after Kurt's death
Disclaimer Girl you have no idea what you are talking about. Go and listen to your Maroon 5 cd.
"The chorus says 'This is a call to all my past resignation.' It's just sort of like a little wave to all the people I ever played music with, people I've been friends with, all my relationships, my family. It's a hello, and in a way a thank you." From Dave Grohl Himself. :P This song's great.
it's a song about a bunch of random shit--acne cream, past relationships, fingernails, and ritalin. Fucking great song!!!
Sounds like it's about a battle with vanity. "Past resignations": To all the times I have given up, now I am going to fight (he is going to stop nodding when he wants to shake his head no). "Fingernails, minocin, ritalin, ballons, magic markers(surgery (plastic))": all reference to self improvements or a major change in self knowledge.
Song is probably about Courtney Love in a non direct but very finger pointing kind of way. This is a Call and I'll stick around seem to be public voicings over Kurt's ex. Perhaps he blames her for everything that was wrong within their circle of friends.
Or it's about having to pay for a cell phone bill.
I've always hated the god d*mn line "finger nails are pretty, finger nails are good" it made me hate this song at an early age but now as a more mature music listener I obviously can look past a couple irksome lines and realize its not a bad song at all.
Definitely fun to turn up and drive around too.
Now, the way I see this, his "past resignations" are things he's given up on. Calling things "pretty" and "good" are the way he felt about the things before he gave up on them. Over all, the song is about having to go to rehab over drug abuse. And then addressing the things that he had left behind in his life, including the drugs.
His resignations:
Visiting = Once a person becomes addicted to certain drugs, they become very detached from the world round them and tend not to interact with friends and family. "Seems that all they ever wanted was a brother" shows that his family missed him quite a bit while he was on the drugs.
Fingernails = Not quite sure about this one..... Certain drugs (such as meth and cocaine) cause the person who is under the influence of them to pick and bite at parts if the body (fingernails, face, ect.) Perhaps this is what it means?
Ritalin = Drug that he's given up on
-----------------------------------------Lyrical Analysis---------------------------------------------------------
This can be a secret, we can keep it good = He's speaking to his drug dealer, he doesn't want his dealer to tell anybody that he's purchased his drugs and he wants to keep it good with him.
Them balloons are pretty big, and say they should ever fall to the ground, call the magic marker.= Well, the balloons represent happiness in life, if his happiness is the ever fall, he is to call the magic marker. The magic marker, as most of you know, is an inhalant, producing an artificial high if its fumes are inhaled. So it basically says he does drugs when he's sad.
It's been too long = He's been doing drugs for so long, it's hard for him to stop.
Ritalin is easy, Ritalin is good, even the ones that watered down the daughter. = He is saying that Ritalin is an easy drug to score, and that it's a really good drug. The "even the ones that watered down the daughter" part refers to how Ritalin, even if it induces highs, it is very dangerous. "Watered down the daughter" is a way of saying having a miscarriage, which many drugs can cause.
Seems that all the cysts and mollusks tend to barter. = Minocin is a type of infection killing medicine often used for sores and openings. Many drugs can cause these to form, so minocin would be used to get rid of infections in them
First off, fingernails only wanted a “Market” not a marker. This song, I believe, is about the chicks he dated in high school. “Seems like all she ever wanted was a brother”. Minicyn and Ritalin are clear teen meds. We can keep a secret? If her big balloons should ever fall, she can call a magic marker (plastic surgeon). But, alas it’s about all his “past resignation”, or chicks he quit in the past.
