Aboard his ship he stops to stare
Needs to smell her, touch her hair
Say's "I can't be without her"
Tonight he's going to be without her

"It's late now", she say's
Makes her mind up goes to bed
Another night alone without him
Another night alone in Charleston

When I wake to find the solace of
All that we've become
I can't wait to make the promises
I've been leery of

I'll be there waiting for you
In the morning when times have changed
I'll be there through the lies and all
Standing like your soldiers
You hold your secrets
Through the days when I need to be alone
I will wait for you
Through the lies and all

She was left behind so they could stay
God to feel him this she prays
It would make her feel so much better
I want to feel so much better

does "you hold your secrets, through the days i need to be alone" have a deeper meaning or not really?

i love this song, "i'll be there waiting for you in the morning when the times have changed, i'll be there through the lies and all" reminds me of my best friend :)

he says both "lies and all" and "rise and fall". the hootie backlash was in full effect by the point in their career, so this song never got its proper due.

I never really understood the line "soundtrack of our lives" but this is one of those songs that is part of that soundtrack of my life.

regarding the meaning of the song, I'm pretty sure its about a man who is a member of the Navy. he is leaving on a deployment for an extended period of time. not being a member of any service, I can only imagine how powerful those feelings of seperation are. especially knowing that a loved one is knowingly placing themselves in harm's way.

when the band joins in together for the final chorus, it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end!

This song's about a man who's gotta leave to make a better life for his family and he can't bear to leave his girl alone. Funny... I know what that's like.

it says "through the rise and fall" not "through the lies and all"...

I really like the part "when i wake to find the solace of all that we became..." at the end of the song. it captured perfectly the feeling for those who separated and promised to wait each other.

This may have been a Navy guy, friend or relative, that Darius knew from his hometown of Charleston, SC which is a Navy base. I've always imagined that the guy is in some sort of special ops, maybe Navy Seals. He has to go on assignments that he can't talk about or can't tell the truth about-'you hold your secrets'- 'throught the lies and all'. 'she was left behind so they could stay'- possibly the wife and kids stayed in Charleston so the kids could stay in their school (great place to raise a family by the way) while the soldier was deployed elsewhere. Many sites incorrectly have the words repeating 'through the lies and all' at the end of the chorus. He does say 'through the rise and fall' which I think is the most important and symbolic line in the song. The rise and fall of the tides meaning the good times and bad times. First time I saw this band was in a small club in SC. My first thought was 'wow, what a voice this guy has.' I think they are a very underrated band, Darius is a very underrated singer and songwriter. They got so popular that it sort of backfired on them. The name didn't help them to be taken seriously.

Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.

Trouble Breathing
Alkaline Trio
While the obvious connections with suicide or alcoholism could be drawn easily, more subtly this song could be about someone who views the world through a negative lens constantly and how as much as the writer tries to show the beauty in the world, this person refuses to see it. It's one or another between the rope and the bottle. There is no good option for this person. They can't see it. Skiba sings it in a kind of exasperated way like He's tired of hearing this negative view constantly and just allowing that person to continue feeling the way they feel knowing he can't do anything about it. You can hear it when he says maybe you're a vampire.

Sunglasses at Night
Corey Hart
In the 1980s, sunglasses were a common fashion for people who wanted to adopt a "tough guy" persona (note all the cop shows from that era -- Simon & Simon, Miami Vice, etc. -- where the lead characters wore shades). So I think this song is about a guy who wears shades as a way of hiding his insecurity after learning that his girlfriend is cheating on him. He's trying to pretend that he's a "tough guy" to hide the fact that his girlfriend's affair is disturbing him.
