I'll make you a deal
Like any other candidate
With the tale walking home
Cause your future's at stake

My cities amaze you
And even smells like the street
There's a bar down at the end
Where I can meet you and your friends

So I scrawled on the walls
In the blood of the tree-cutters
Rolled up scandals and
other boys

And having so much fun with the poisonous peoples
Spreading rumors and lies, and stories they made up.
Some make you sing
and some make you scream
And some make you wish
That you'd never been seen...
There's a shop on the corner that's selling papier mache
Making bullet-proof faces, join and dance with Casius
Clay
And if you want it,
boy,
Get it here babe!

So you scream out a lie:
"I want you! I need you!
Anyone out there? Anytime?"
You said: "kiss me, I'm the one"
I said: "Daddy, I want you when it's
Good it's really good, and when it's bad I'm not abusive"
And if you want it, boy,
Get it here babe!

So on the street where you live
I put the hole on my hand
Before I put all I had into another man
On the leather floor, in the back of a car
In the center like a church with the door ajar
Well I guess we must be looking for a different kind
But we can't stop trying to make up our minds
When the sun drips down on the city at night
Flashin on the ground and kicking in fright
I guess we could cruise down one more time
With you by my side it should be fine
We'll buy some drugs and watch a band

And jump in the river holding hands

    Song Comparison
Great tune on their amazing cinema verite album which I played to death in 1990 while in college. FYI this is a Bowie remake and the lyrics here above are way off on several places which instead of correcting I will simply paste the original songmeanings.com/songs/view/3530822107858489228/

Another Love
Tom Odell
I think the meaning is pretty clear. This person got really burned in a previous relationship, and because of this is unable to love and show care in his present one, even though he so badly wants to. It's lovely song, and very sad. You can really feel how defeated and frustrated he is with himself.

Somewhere Only We Know
Keane
Per the FAQ on Keane's website, Keane's drummer Richard Hughes, stated the following: "We've been asked whether "Somewhere Only We Know" is about a specific place, and Tim has been saying that, for him, or us as individuals, it might be about a geographical space, or a feeling; it can mean something individual to each person, and they can interpret it to a memory of theirs... It's perhaps more of a theme rather than a specific message... Feelings that may be universal, without necessarily being totally specific to us, or a place, or a time..." With the nostalgic sentiment and the overall tone of the song, I think Keane is attempting to express a Portuguese term known as 'saudade', which does not have a direct English translation but roughly means "that which we remember because it is gone."

System
Mel And Kim
Just listening for the 784,654th time....and it's just perfect in every way. Just incredible. The only reason it was remade was to scoop up a boatload of money from a more modern and accepting audience. But it is a completely different song than the other one that sounds slapped together in a few takes without a thought for the meaning. This song captivates me still, after 50+ years. Takes me to the deep South and the poverty of some who lived thru truly hard times. And the powerful spirit of a poor young girl being abandoned to her future with only a red dress and her wits to keep her alive. She not only stayed alive, she turned her hard beginnings around, became self sufficient, successful and someone with respect for herself. She didn't let the naysayers and judgers stop her. She's the one sitting in the drivers seat at the end. So, not a song about a poor girl, but a song of hope and how you can rise up no matter how far down you started. There is a huge difference between a singer who simply belts out a song that is on a page in front of them, and someone who can convey an entire experience with their voice. Telling not just a story with words, but taking you inside it and making you feel like you are there, with their interpretation.
