Marvin, he was a friend of mine
And he could sing a song
His heart in every line
Marvin sang of the joy and pain
He opened up our minds
And I still can hear him say
Aw talk to me so you can see
What's going on
Say you will sing your songs
Forevermore (evermore)

Gonna be some sweet sounds
Coming down on the nightshift
I bet you're singing proud
Oh I bet you'll pull a crowd
Gonna be a long night
It's gonna be all right
On the nightshift
Oh you found another home
I know you're not alone
On the nightshift

You found another home
I know you're not alone
On the nightshift

Jackie (Jackie), hey what'you doing now
It seems like yesterday
When we were working out
Jackie (Jackie, oh) you set
The world on fire
You came and gifted us
Your love it lifted us
Higher and higher
Keep it up and
We'll be there
At your side
Oh say you will sing
Your songs forevermore (evermore)

Gonna be some sweet sounds
Coming down on the nightshift
I bet you're singing proud
Oh I bet you'll pull a crowd
Gonna be a long night
It's gonna be all right
On the nightshift
Oh you found another home
I know you're not alone
On the nightshift

Gonna be some sweet sounds
Coming down on the nightshift
I bet you're singing proud
Oh I bet you'll pull a crowd
Gonna be a long night
It's gonna be all right
On the nightshift
Oh you found another home
I know you're not alone
On the nightshift

Gonna miss your sweet voice
That soulful voice
On the nightshift
We all remember you
Ooh the songs are coming through
At the end of a long day
It's gonna be okay
On the nightshift
You found another home
I know you're not alone
On the nightshift

I think 'nightshift' means a performance in another world (heaven). Night stands for death and afterlife.

This song glows with 80's romanticism of motown music gone by.

    My Opinion

    REAL POWER

I learned tonight that this was a tribute to MARVIN Gaye and JACKIE Wilson/ i like the interpretation here that NIGHTSHIFT could be their heaven. what strikes me so much is that this song is full of LOVE

The artist is reinforcing that 'we are not alone', ... we are influenced by souls departed, ... even after they go,

this is the real power in these sung verses

Growing up, originally thought this song was about infidelity, however, it was a tribute to two passed solo artists, whom both died in 1984, Jackie Wilson, and Marvin Gaye.

Interesting that the lyrics worked well in both guises I suppose.

    Wonderful track though.

A touching groove dedicated to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, this song feels good to just relax to, while at the same time, giving you that warm feeling that songs like this always do.

The second verse, while referring to Jackie Wilson, also refers to Jack Kennedy and his assault on racism in US Universitys - history.com/this-day-in-history/jfk-faces-down-defiant-governor - hence the 'You lifted us higher and higher' lyric. A very clever song that - like many of the greats it refers to - works on many levels.

As an aside... both Marvin Gaye and Jack Kennedy died in tragic circumstances.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
