She's My Baby Lyrics
Actually, I don't think Hope wrote the lyrics for many of the early songs. Her male partner - I forgot his name - may have written the lyrics and she just sang them the way he had written them. They both receive credit for lyrics/music, so it is not clear who wrote what.
So, no. I don't think it's about adoption or about a homosexual relationship. I think it's about a guy who fell in love with a woman, but this woman is now with someone else. She's so beautiful that people turn around to look at her as she walks by. He still considers her his love (his baby), but she belongs to another guy he knows and is possibly friends with.
Yeah, yeah. I love her. I still think of her as mine. I still think about her even though she is with you. Sorry, dude.
I think that this song is about giving your child away for adoption, from the point of view of the one who is giving their baby away. Ok, well, this is pretty much how I have dechiphered it; a young girl who became pregnant, but was not able to keep her child...as much as it hurt her. And now she can never forget her, she always thinks of her. Watches her walk home ( from school ) --'Yesterday was another day, when I Saw your baby, walkin' home alone'.
Possibly calling the house of residence just to hang up. --' I'm feelin' sorry, I called you but I, I guess that I forgot your name'. ..
And this could possibly be a reference to the actual birth? --'But she's just like lightning, She goes right through you, Then you know you'll never Be the same'.
Technically she is the childs parent, but legally the child now belongs to another. -- ' She's my baby, Ain't that something, But I know that she belongs to you, She belongs to you '.
Shrug. Reread the lyrics with this thought in mind, maybe it will make sense to you as well.
Plus, in the video, there is a glimps of a little girl holding a doll....
Another thing I thought it could have meant, was a secret homosexual relationship between two women, in which one of them had an open heterosexual relationship. So basically one of them had a man. The song is sung from the point of view of the one who only has one mate. So her baby belongs to another. And her baby has been thinking of leaving her, just to be with that other.
Now that i think of it, it doesn't necessarily have to be an open heterosexual relationship, either way, the baby is in a relationship whilst still having her fun on the side. ..
god, i loooove this song. it's meaning is blurry but it doesnt matter because it has so much emotion.
in the lyrics i feel like it says: "Everybody else, looks at my baby Then they wanna know her name"
instead of "then they wandered over to me"
from my point of view, i see it as one girl who is totally infatuated with this other mysterious, beautiful girl when she sees her walking home alone. not infatuated like love, just obsession and wanting. but the first girl knows that the mysterious baby is not hers, that she belongs to someone else and that she wont ever get to truly know her. but the baby is 'like lighting', once shes struck, the girl wont ever be the same. i think the song embodies awe, beauty and maybe even a hint of jealousy for someone you really want but will never have or be.
this song is so inspiring to me, im writing a short story based on it's lyrics.
gah, i love mazzy and i dream of hope's voice.
don't think the meaning is too complicated, she's just thinking about her crazy, wild baby.
hope is my baby.
I saw this song as describing a kidnapping. either from the stand point of the kidnapper, or from the view of the kidnapped.

I always saw it as an inner personal conflict about keeping yourself or loosing it to someone else, that lover you can't let go of. They'll call just to ask for a different name.
