They say it's me,
That makes you do things
You might not have done,
If I was away
And that's it's me,
That likes to talk to you
And watches you,
As you walk away
Don't say it's useless,
Don't say forget it
Don't bring me wishes,
Of silly dreams
Just say it's all,
From too much freedom
Too many fingers,
And to anything
They say it's you,
That washes the weary
And brings the night into the day
If you won't notice,
How can I show you
All of you worries,
Have all gone away
Don't leave me lonely,
Don't leave me unhappy
Just bring me up into your fate
If you don't need me,
Then don't deceive me
Letting my freedom turn into stone
Just be my angel,
If you love me
Be my angel,
In the night
Be my angel,
'Cause you need me
Be my angel,
And treat me right
Don't say you love me,
If you don't need me
Don't send me roses,
On your behalf
Just take me down,
And walk through your river
Down the middle,
And make it last
Holding on to you,
Holding on to me
Holding on tight,
'Till my love is crossed
Don't say it's useless,
And don't say forget it
You are my spirit,
Now you are gone
This is one of my favorite songs of all time. Hope's voice just fills my heart in some way. Beautiful song, on a great album. Kinda a shame they never got popular, but at the same time I like that they didn't, it's like a hidden gem.
To me it sounds like it is one of those impossible relationships, they want each other, they lust after each other, it is so crazy it makes them feel things they never felt before, makes them do things they wouldn't do if they were not inlove.
At the same time it sounds as though she feels like he is playing her, like it is all a game, she wants it to be total and she doesn't want him to give up on them even if it is hard sometimes. but he should not deceive her he should just admit that he needs her just like she needs him.
the drawn out heartache one feels as it becomes clear a relationship won’t work in the end. too deep to call things off for the fear of losing what’s dearest. the last line hits.
I think the first person is correct. It's about lusting after someone. And I think it's the singer of the song who's being lusted after. When she says "be my angel," she's accepting his invitation. She doesn't want the man to think his efforts are in vain; she doesn't want him to think it's useless or to forget it. She has an effect on him and makes him do things he otherwise wouldn't. Maybe she's been hurt in the past, and that's why she asks him to be kind to her.
I do love the song. I think it's about man's relationship with god. And, perhaps, it criticizes those whose faith is gain based, or those who keep their faith out of fear or simply tradition or habit. Though, I do think either the last two verses should be cut, or maybe just the second to last verse should be cut (the one starting with "just be my angel"), the song seems to suffer from unnecessary ending lyrics.
