She hangs brightly from the tree
Wonders what she's done to me
I'm aware of your game
Come and watch me
Watch me come down
Takes me down deep and wide
Pulls me through to the other side
She's the winner of her game
Come and watch her
Watch her come down
It stays down
Sour in truth
Lies of lovin'
The story's cheap
She's the winner of her game
Come and watch her
Watch her come down
Deep and wide
Inside, inside, inside

I think this song is about finding out that someone you love has killed themselves, and how, upon realizing it, you also feel dead inside. It's like the person who's passed on has taken you to the "other side" with them. Either that or it's overtly about coming down off of drugs - you're high and hanging brightly as you hit the other side (that ephemeral high), but as you come down it cuts you like a knife when you have to face reality. To me, though, I think suicide seems to fit better. Perhaps it was a literal hanging (or maybe that's just a metaphor and it was actually a drug overdose that killed her friend/lover). The "game" is either drugs (you win the game by scoring again) or life (you win by getting out of it), and the "victory" is so very bittersweet.

Its memories hanging from the tree The whole album is about someone moving on from Roback. We as guys return to the past, don't know why & Im guessing he's returning to the tree & memories of her & she won when he gave in. . Further introspection... . Look at the album full of unrequainted love of a "Superstar in your own private movie": Blue Flower, Ghost on the Highway, Free, Taste of Blood, etc & he's wandering lost of direction, which we all do after failed relationships. Also, Hope sings the lyrics but if you listen/read them it's obvious Roback wrote them.

Ooo, trippy! This will possibly stand to always be my favorite Mazzy song. It was possibly the very first one I heard from the band and it hypnotized me. What's it about? Jeez, it's another one of those druggy sounding ones with an obscure meaning. I love the way the lyrics and music just seem to meander and swirl. Definitely a nice psychedelic effect. Love the organ! I just get the sense you're supposed to feel hypnotized with a song like this. With the dark, bizarre lyrics, meandering music, and Hope's vocals, what else are you to do?

I think the correct lyrics are: She hangs brightly from the tree Wonders what she's done to me I'm aware of your game Come and watch me Watch me come down Takes me down deep and wide Pulls me through to the other side She's the winner of her game Come and watch her Watch her come down It stays down Sour and true Lies of lovin' The story's too She's the winner of her game Come and watch her Watch her come down. Deep and wide Inside, inside, inside

    My Interpretation
This is about the Lilith and EVE, the EDEN the garden and the Adamu. Forbidden fruit. Lilith chose to leave eden refusing to be subservient to Adam. LILITH basically told everyone to F off. This all took place prior to eating from the tree of knowledge. Lilith would probably go look in and the eden hanging off a tree upside down. Now By this time the forbidden fruit has been eaten. Eve has become aware of Lilith\'s trip. Eve is envious of Lilith\'s freedom and how she stood up for herself. \n\nHey listen people, imo one crazy wild story we are fed deserves another. \nLies\nLies lies

Shudder to Think
This song is timeless, and nearly 20 years after its creation, still possesses the mystique it did the first time i heard it ~1994. To me, at first blush, all those years ago, it had some kind of homo-erotic allure. The line "so that the others may do" tells of something which must be done for others to follow suit. It felt like like some kind of roxy-glam-pop invitation to sexual liberation. Upon further introspection I think the song may not have an intrinsic meaning, but simply represents a sort of "holding open the door" for people who otherwise might be affronted by this song/band's unusual style. I know, as a sort of armchair rock-historian, that there have been few bands so daring and so true to the sound that wanted to emerge from within, whether the creator wanted it or not. This band handled it with elegance and grace seldom, if ever, seen.

I believe this is another amazingly on point and nuanced commentary on the insanity that follows emotionally abusive relationships. The abuser has no anxieties, no emotional pain, or salience/memory for that matter, so the survivor appears to be the crazy one, obsessed with the abuse and that buzzword that seems to ignite arguments about diagnosing people without a degree, etc. funny how you say the words domestic violence, abuse, abuse survivor and boom the subject changes. Anyways, I especially relate to her midnights becoming afternoons, complex PTSD often leads to this phenomenon, whether due to purposeful sleep deprivation by the abuser, or just hyper vigilance associated with the PTSD, along with the fear of facing people, especially your loved ones, who Never actually understand, even if they try, because all they see is you, on fire, screaming about the arsonist that no one ever sees, and who has been spreading lies about your alleged mental instability, deceptive personality, etc. the whole time. While the last thing survivors need is more blame, our society supports a narrative that blames the objectively innocent party because the blatantly guilty party has spent their entire lives fabricating a persona and we’re just being human, and human psychology is quite counterintuitive especially in the context of trauma. Look at Amber Heard. Vilified and not believed, regardless of what any abuse survivor could recognize as a fellow survivor instantly. But Johnny depp is a malignant narcissist, a man, and wealthy as all get out. It’s sick.
