Lying awake in my hospital room
Silas Creek parkway is my only view
And the doctor just came by and told me the news
I need a second opinion
I don't believe that it's true

This is probably one of the most depressing songs I have EVER heard. The first time I heard it, I started to cry because it's frankness is totally unexpected. It's beautiful, emotional piano part is haunting. It gives me chills.

Ben Folds is amazing at emotional dialogue, he uses such few words that hold such incredible emotion...especially in songs like Cigarette (Fred Jones Part 1 if you will)

I believe this was written by either Darell or Robert-- I forget which. His girlfriend was dying, I think? Apparently there was a second verse to it that was about getting married in the hospital. Favorite BFF song: it's a toss up between this and Jane. When they wrote beautiful music, they didn't mess around.

Having spent a good portion of last year in the hospital, I can easily say that Ben manages to capture the feeling beautifully in only 35 words and just over two minutes. What an artist...

Ben has said in interviews that he's a huge Radiohead fan (their "Just" video is his favourite). This music, to me, sounds a lot like "Subterranean Homesick Alien" from "OK Computer." "Hospital Song" is slower, but compare the progression and the melody of the verses. It's cool. But that aside, I do love this song. It's one of my favourites on the album, and one of my favourites in the Ben Folds repertoire.

Such a great song... Does anyone else think it sounds like Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds?

I like how this song goes right into "Army" which is the most fun song on the album. I don't know if he was making some kind of point with the contradiction of super sad/super goofy, but it's kind of annoying. So actually, I don't like it. Both are great songs though.

Ben said in an interview that he was thinking about what someone might do while they're in the hospital, and he figured that they would think about their lives, like the time they decided to join the army. This is why he goes into Army after this song.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

Another Love
Tom Odell
I think the meaning is pretty clear. This person got really burned in a previous relationship, and because of this is unable to love and show care in his present one, even though he so badly wants to. It's lovely song, and very sad. You can really feel how defeated and frustrated he is with himself.

Zombie
Cranberries, The
"Zombie" is about the ethno-political conflict in Ireland. This is obvious if you know anything of the singer (Dolores O'Riordan)'s Irish heritage and understood the "1916" Easter Rising reference. "Another head hangs lowly Child is slowly taken And the violence caused such silence Who are we mistaken - Another mother's breaking Heart is taking over" Laments the Warrington bomb attacks in which two children were fatally injured on March 23rd, 1993. Twelve year old Tim Parry was taken off life support with permission from his mother after five days in the hospital, virtually braindead. "But you see it's not me It's not my family" References how people who are not directly involved with the violence feel about it. They are "zombies" without sympathy who refuse to take action while others suffer.

Of Mice & Men
This track is about is about questioning why the sky would choose to be blue if it had the choice to be anything else, “blue also meaning sad,” states frontman Aaron Pauley. “It's about comforting a loved one in a time of loss by telling them you feel blue, too.”

@Kahiara Actually I think the husband passed away, "She sang for you last night She heard you were calling" Many people say they have felt, heard, or seen their loved ones after they have passed. "Don't be scared now Close your eyes She holds guard tonight Go on forward no remorse Life will take it's course" This is said to the late husband by a third part (never named), who encourages him to pass on. Because life will eventually continue. The phrase "holds guard" refers to the ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/… ) which is a Christian ceremony held after someone dies. Now it is usually held right after the funeral, but in most celtiic countries the wake is held before the funeral. "She danced with you last night so you will remember All you have shared, a lifetime." This sentence feels as if the only thing it wants to convey is their history together, namely, husband and wife. For the rest it just refers back to the first verse.
