Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
I don't think you notice
When you see my face
I guess you're waiting
To spin me around again
Wheels I guess are turning
Somewhere inside my head
I know that this is
Deeper than you get
But you're coming back again
You don't mean to waste my time
But you're coming back so
Chorus:
Don't tell me
How to be
'Cause I like some suffering
Don't ask me
What I need
I'm just fine
Here finding me
Me
I've already given
Up on getting through
I never question
Who I'm talking to
Oh so much for nothing
But nothing means so much
I know it's touching
But I've been out of touch
And it's all that I can do
I'm a sight for my sore eyes
But it's all I am so
Chorus
I don't think you notice
When I can't reach out
I guess you're waiting
On somebody else again
Oh so much for talking
It's all been said before
I'm hearing something
but I wish you'd just say more
But you're going off again
When I try to just hold on
But you're going off so
Chorus
When you see my face
I guess you're waiting
To spin me around again
Wheels I guess are turning
Somewhere inside my head
I know that this is
Deeper than you get
But you're coming back again
You don't mean to waste my time
But you're coming back so
Chorus:
Don't tell me
How to be
'Cause I like some suffering
Don't ask me
What I need
I'm just fine
Here finding me
Me
I've already given
Up on getting through
I never question
Who I'm talking to
Oh so much for nothing
But nothing means so much
I know it's touching
But I've been out of touch
And it's all that I can do
I'm a sight for my sore eyes
But it's all I am so
Chorus
I don't think you notice
When I can't reach out
I guess you're waiting
On somebody else again
Oh so much for talking
It's all been said before
I'm hearing something
but I wish you'd just say more
But you're going off again
When I try to just hold on
But you're going off so
Chorus

I think the meaning is pretty clear. This person got really burned in a previous relationship, and because of this is unable to love and show care in his present one, even though he so badly wants to. It's lovely song, and very sad. You can really feel how defeated and frustrated he is with himself.
I love this song!
"Im a sight for my sore eyes" gets to me a lot. we are all that weve got. This song reminds me of people that piss me off that think they know whats good for you but they dont only you do. so when I hear it thats what I think about..
This song means a LOT to me because I can relate to it completely. I think it's about a relationship that's falling apart. It perfectly describes a relationship I was in once. My boyfriend completely ignored me, he didn't even notice he was doing it, and he was always waiting on someone else, and making fun of me even but he never realized how much I was taking it to heart. "But you're coming back again... You don't mean to waste my time..." DESPITE what an ass the person's girlfriend is, he can't let go of the relationship, he doesn't really want to blame her and says it's not her fault, she doesn't mean it.
And then the chorus is what the person is feeling but can't say. They don't want this person to try to tell them what to do or explain things to them because she has absolutely no idea what's really going on with him. He is going through things that person can't relate to at all and is trying to find himself and doesn't need her help. This is "deeper than you get", the girlfriend/partner is happy and simple and doesn't understand this suffering or searchign or any of it.
Then the next verse... He's given up on it completely now, the person just doesn't get it. He just goes around talking to people now, and it doesn't really matter who. "So much for nothing, but nothing means so much", they're never seeing eachother, never talking, never doing anything, there's nothing. And this nothing means so much, it's horrible.
Then, again, she doens't pick up on what he's going through. She doesn't notice when he's trying to reach out and tell her but can't, she's just off having fun with other people. Talking to her is stupid, it's all been said before. Now, they're talking again, he's hearing something, but he wishes she'd just say more.... She's not on the same level as him. It's going off again, the relationship is falling apart. He's trying to just hold on, but she's going off in his mind, going down... it's got to end.
This song is word for word what my boyfriend Max was like. It's kinda shocking how much it describes it.
i absolutely agree with garbojen on how ppl think they know what's best for u. i hate ppl telling me what to do when they don't know what's good for me. fuck those ppl!
I agree with garbojen and narsil...
same. its such a frutrating feeling, and i think this song expresses that feeling really well
I love this song...in a way its cheery and makes you think of a day on the beach but then it could be depressing.
man this song describes me and my gf rt now and its just so perfectly articulated.
I think the gril in the relationship is trying to figure out what she wants. well,s he knows what she wants, but she cant do what hse wants. she confuses herself to the point where shes so lost nothing makes snese to her anymore. the guy tries to help her as much as he can, but its not going to do anygood until she can convince herself of the truth.
I think this song is about a guy who is in love with a shallow girl.... He is finding himself and she just goes on being shallow. He is capable of deep emotions and can respect them while she flitters around.... I like some suffering. She is careless with his feelings and has no clue about real love... waiting on sombody else agian... It fit perfectly with a girl I was foolish enough to fall for....
