In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
This could be about God or a woman really... It's hard to ascertain the precise meaning of the song, but perhaps that was his purpose. I lean more towards spirituality. He uses a lot of biblical references in his songs. This leads me to believe that religion had a big influence on him at some point in his life, maybe as a child. Now you can be spiritual without believing in the dogma of religion (I am).

God flooded the world with torrential rains, killing all life but Noah and his animals. Fairly depressing stuff. I think he's pointing out that he struggled to know God, but that religion made it so difficult because of the horrible stories. But I could be completely wrong, and he intended it to be about a woman... Fun to think about!
