Well guess who I saw today
Standing outside my favorite cafe
Sipping his morning coffee
On my street

I said how are you?
I'm just fine
I think that I recognize that tie
He said sorry I never got to say good-
By the I'm doing much much better
I was just a little under the weather
But pay no mind to me

'Cause you know that
It only hurts when I breathe
And I make believe
That maybe he truly needs me
It only hurts here and there
But doesn't he care?
Doesn't he ever miss me?
It only hurts me when I breathe

So you finally quit smoking these days?
And I like your hair real short by the way
I never could get it out of your face
So if I don't care if they made you go
Tell your parents I said hello
Tell them my life is going just as-
I planned a trip
I'm going somewhere exotic
I will show you the pictures
Tell you all about it for
That's how you leave me

'Cause you know that
It only hurts when I breathe
When I make believe that
Maybe he truly needs me
It only hurts here and there
But doesn't he care?
Doesn't he ever miss me?
It only hurts me when I breathe

So whatcha doin' tomorrow night?
Let's have a drink
I won't bite
He said sure let me just run it by
My wife

It only hurts when I breathe
When I make believe that
Maybe he truly needs me
It only hurts here and there
But doesn't he care?
Doesn't he ever miss me?
It only hurts me when I breathe

I think that this song is about the point of view of a woman, who ends up meeting an ex-boyfriend after a long time of not seeing each other. They talk about their lives, and we learn that they had a wonderful relationship, but that it ended both badly and unexpectedly. She's been having a hard time getting over it, and is unaware that her ex has moved on. So she is devastated when she finds out...This is only a guess. I have no idea what this song is really about.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
