Trains Across the Sea Lyrics

Troubles
No troubles
On the line

And I can't stand to see you
I can't stand to see you
when you're crying at home

Scotch and penicillin
Please try Carlton
A cold, black maple hanger
And husbands on the run

I just got back from a dream attack
That took me by surprise
And in there I met a lady
Her name was Shady Sides
And she said:

It's been evening all day long
It's been evening all day long and
How can something so old be so wrong

Sin and gravity
Drag me down to sleep
To dream of trains across the sea
Trains across the sea

Half hours on earth
What are they worth
I don't know

In twenty-seven years
I drunk fifty thousand beers
And they just wash against me
Like the sea into a pier

I feel like this song is about failed relationship, substance abuse and an all around apathy for life.

no comments?!? this is like...the best silver jews song. almost. "in 27 years, i've drunk 50,000 beers." classic.

I agree. This really is one of the best Silver Jews songs.

I understand that it's about a failed relationship, a seduction, and growing old/tired, but I can't really pin the meaning of this one down. But that's all for the best, I guess. It's a part of the magic that is David Berman.

Not Valid

I agree, even with the almost. It's been stuck in my head for days. It's been evening all day long. That's the most repeated part playing(in my head). What about what it means? I didn't come here for that, I just couldn't remember part of a line.

Oops. I just negatively rated my own comment. I was trying to delete it because I thought I posted it twice. The "I agree" tricked me. I didn't see the first comment. Oops. Now I might negatively rate this comment on purpose.
