Tears Of Bitterness Lyrics
But my faith was soon turned to doubt
When everything around me fell apart
No unity remains, I was abandoned
Left alone, put away, God forsaken
The downfall of my faith
A glance towards the sky
So unreachable without signs
I'm drifting towards the unknown
And the loneliness drains my strength
Old memories dawns upon me
Your light, your warmth
Why have You forsaken me
When I need You the most
Where are You to find?
I've tried long enough
You seem further away than ever
Will I ever trust You again?
The broken hope within
Is this what You promised me
The day I gave my life to You?
A wish, a longing towards the sky
But still encircled
By Lucifer's freezing shadow
God if You really exist
Illuminate the path that leads me back
Words from the past come to life
A light from above melts my callous heart
Who seek and wait for Him

This is probably my favourite Extol song lyrics-wise. Tells of a genuine moment of crisis in faith, where everything seems to be crashing down around you - very reminiscent of many of the Psalms of David, including Psalm 22 (from which the quote, "My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?" is taken). I love the honesty about feeling betrayed ("God if you really exist illuminate the path that leads me back"), but also the reminder of God's ultimate goodness at the end, again following the pattern of the Psalms.
One cannot help but feel lost and confused in a world of such pain and strife, but God is real and God truly loves you, and longs for you to be free and restored to be with him. That I believe is the truth at the heart of this epic, but honest, psalm of anguish.

This is a longtime favorite as well, earlier Extol was brilliant. The solitude and doubt that burden the heart is heavy and stifling. But there is always a Way, a path of restoration from the lowest slump. Very good comment, profsket, I believe it as well. Down but not defeated.
