Tight Like That Lyrics

Woke up this morning, put on my Sunday shoes.
Don't ask me why, it's just the nature of my groove.
I larged down the boulevard, came under attack,
But I rocked them senseless, 'cause honey it's tight like that.

I hung a left down to Lemans' Avenue,
Stagger Lees everywhere, trying to bring me doom, oh no.
And that Old Scratch, he tried to purchase this soul,
That don't confront me, 'cause I'm never in the need of a payroll.
Heck, yeah.

Amen, do it all again.
Rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham.
Spit shine and a three piece suit,
Good Lord I got to thank you 'cause you do it like you do.
Hallelujah, all the people in the back.
Hallelujah, it's tight like that.
Hallelujah, all the people up front.
Tight like that, rapture, rock.

And all you know-it-alls with politic views.
Ideals don't situate themselves in His groove.
So if you want to know, you just got to ask.
But if you don't lose that skin, you'll never be tight like that.
Watch me work, yeah.

Don't try to sell me your New Age guru troubles.
'Cause I'm already reeling doing that good time gospel shuffle.
And all your thumpings about some Armageddon,
Ain't no big deal, 'cause I already hang with Him.

Oh yeah, tight like that.
Honey it's tight like that.
Honey it's tight like that.
Honey it's tight like that.

Can I get a witness for the rock of ages?
For the rock of ages?
Can I get a witness for the rock of ages?
For the rock of ages?

So I gotta point out that the other comments CoMpLeTeLy missed the point of this song. This is from the PoV of a rich man who thinks he is better than everyone else...

Larged down the Boulevard, came under attack - means he just bought everything on the street, and people are pissed... but i rocked them senseless, cause honey it's tight like that - a display of power...

A Stagger Lee is a "pimp"... they are bringing him doom, "property values". And the devil tried to purchase his soul, but he's rich and doesn't need anything...

Then the 3rd verse is about brick walling objections and opinions. He's claiming God doesn't care what you think... if you don't lose that skin - is symbolic of courage to speak out.

Last verse.... reeling means confused and unable to act. Hes saying don't tell me about your own doomsday crap, because I'm lost in my own beliefs where I say let it happen.

The chorus is a direct reference to Lazarus and the Rich Man

This song is written satirically from the rich man's perspective who thinks he is infallible and on a straight road to heaven.

Clarifying some of the allusions here: Stagger Lee is a man who got in a drunken fight with another man and when the man took his hat Stagger Lee shot him. It is a nickname used for the man and popularized in a blues song by Mississippi John Hurt.

Old Scratch is another name for the Devil.

The song overall seems to be Clutch saying how much they are tight with God.

The song basically sets the scene of the speaker being confornted with all the bullshit of the modern world (the Stagger Lee reference among others) and finding refuge in music, depicted here in the manner of evangelical christianity ( the 'gospel', 'hallijuliah' and 'rapture' references)

I used to date a guy that liked to get it on while listening to Clutch --- weird, but the murky sound and beat make good background noise for that.

I have no idea what any of their songs mean. I never really paid attention to the words. ;)

This is a rocking song from the point of view of a Preacher/holy man/what have you, on his way to enlightenment. Neil consistantly writes from the POV of a personality he has invented in a snap shot of time.
