I heard in an interview with Chris Martin that he was trying to get to a girl who was seeing someone else ("but you pay me no attention..."). He was always playing the best friend and persevered through it ("I'll be there by your side, just you try and stop me."), finally telling her he'd even change to be more like the other guy, but she should be careful because "I'd change for good." He asks if the words he says make her shiver, and he knows that while he'd wait forever, he only has one chance before she commits too fully to the wrong guy.
Moral of the story, Chris Martin is the perfect man hahaha. But seriously, don't reject love from places you don't expect it. You deserve the guy who will play the best friend while he waits for you and makes you shiver with his words. I chose my Chris, and two years later, we're about to get married ;)
Thank you for being awesome. I love people's interpretations, but the artist's own meaning is always a rare treat.

I've done exactly this. I never thought I would fall for a "sorority girl", because of the connotations behind the "label". How wrong I was grouping all women in sororities together. Extremely long story short, I began falling for this girl at the same exact time I rejected her altruism and connection to me. We had a connection I will never forget, and I made two bonehead mistakes that ultimately ended this connection. It was extremely painful and sent me into a terrible depression, another thing I...

Seriously, it can be painful rejecting love you don't expect. I learned the hard way. Always keep an open mind.
Happy interpreting,
Eric
@coldplaywisdom Well I'm one of those best friends, hope they listen to your advice.

I think this song is about much more than just unrequited love. The frequent transitions into the minor mode and the lyric "don't you shiver?" add a vindictive or otherwise bitter quality to the song. It is anything but sweet and touching. This song is saying "Look at all the affection I'm pouring out. Don't you see what you're missing? Doesn't your neglect of me make you feel guilty? It should. It should make you shiver."
Makes perfect sense!!!

I wonder... is the author really making a question? I think he might be saying don't shiver, don't be afraid, cause i'll be there for you, i'll take care of you. what d'you think?

I agree with npchong. Not necessarily on it being a question etc.

On the face of it it's a really pretty song but deliberately tries, as is the trend, to bring negative or sinister connatations with words, to titillate. Not that there's anything bad about subverting a sweet sentiment but, in this case the singer HERE's clearly relying on the "just because I'm a man, I can use that make myself out to be a successful threat in some way" sort of trope. And in a way I wish bands didn't rely on sexist baggage to try and bring "edge"...

To me, this song is about a person in love with someone to a great extent. Only, the person they love can't see it at all. It's really sad.
reminds me of me :/

Shiver makes me shiver. :p
Quite frankly, if I could make a soundtrack of my unrequited love, this would be on top of the list.
It's amazing how Chris Martin made a situation that feels like hell sound so beautiful in the same vein, since even though unrequited love is hell, it's still beautiful because (for me at least) it changed my whole way of thinking. It made me completely new and restored hope within me, which I guess is a good thing.
It's like Chris is saying, "You keep on with what you're doing. Just know that I shall always love you and that the feeling will never change." to this girl. He gives his attention and spends time on her and gets nothing in return. Amazingly, however, he doesn't seem fazed by it. He just keeps on giving the attention and spending time.
For me, the lines, "Did you want me to change? Well, I changed for good." really resonate because I did change as a result of falling for this girl. In fact, I think that Chris Martin successfully encapsuled my feelings in this song. Chris Martin is such an amazing songwriter.
And I'm just too fucking emo.
This song is so beautiful.
He just wants the girl to notice him...
Sometimes we are looking for someone to love us the same way we love them.
And I don't think he's going to give up.
The speaker professes his unrequited love to his lover, whom he urges to stop being so cold, notice him, and care.
I C I M agreeing with you twice in one day. I usually don't get along with anybody so this is a major feat :) Regarding the song, the love may not be unrequited. Perhaps she's just waiting for him to actually appear in her life rather than wait. What's he's waitin' for anyway? Time waits for nobody is the saying my parents used to use. (Oh, Lord, I just had a visual of them lecturing me. Thanx lots :)

This is a song of hope. The person whom is singing it is telling the other one that no matter what, he/she will always be there for her/him. "Selfmutilized" needs to realize that although it may be sad that he's not getting the attention, it's wonderful that he has that much love for her that he will stand by her and change himself for the bettermeant of her.
this band tell me that being hard and noisy isnt everything!! .......way to go coldplay!!!
I think it's funny that when a guy feels this way about a girl, if she feels similarly about him, it's "sweet" and stuff like that, but if she doesn't, it seems really creepy and stalker-ish. It's all in the eye of the beholder, I guess.
