"Lighten Up" as written by Michael Louis Diamond, Adam Horovitz, Mark Ramos Nishita and Adam Nathaniel Yauch....
Lighten up, gotta lighten up, gotta lighten up right now
Gotta lighten up, gotta lighten up, gotta lighten up right now
Gotta lighten up, gotta lighten up, gotta lighten up right now
Gotta lighten up, gotta lighten up, gotta lighten up
Shine like the sun

Lighten up, gotta lighten up, gotta lighten up right now
Gotta lighten up, gotta lighten up, gotta lighten up right now
Gotta lighten up, gotta lighten up, gotta lighten up right now
Gotta lighten up, gotta lighten up, gotta lighten up
Shine like the sun

General CommentMan, lighten up. Who died? Who's homeless? Who has cancer? Who lost a child? This song is a great song to remind us that we're alive, we are free, and we can make choices. Life could be so much worse. Good song.

My InterpretationKnowing that Yauch is involved with Buddhist practices, it occurs to me that this may be a reference to the Lojong slogan which translates loosely as "always rely only on a happy mind". Lojong is a practice centered on a series of slogans to use to train the mind. lojongmindtraining.com

The fact that the only concept in this song is "lighten up = shine like the sun" seems to fit the simplicity of this slogan "always rely ONLY on a happy mind". Nothing else is really necessary.

    NAMASTE!

General CommentGreat song. I saw them do this song in '98 in Atlanta. That weird thing in the middle turned into a long solo. I don't know what that weird thing is but it was crazy! Check Your Head is well worth buying again if you get the remastered edition from BeastieBoys.com in Apple Lossless-especially if your iTunes hooked up to a home theater. It sounds incredible.
