Miss Chatelaine Lyrics
I have lived just for this
I can't explain why I've become
Miss Chatelaine
Hold me captive just a while
I can't explain why I've become
Miss Chatelaine
Clouds of qualm
Burst into sunshine
Words my love just reply
I can't explain why I 've become
Miss Chatelaine
Miss Chatelaine
Hold me captive just a while
I can't explain why I've become
Miss Chatelaine
Clouds of qualm
Burst into sunshine
I have lived just for this
I can't explain why I've become
Miss Chatelaine
Miss Chatelaine
Miss Chatelaine
Miss Chatelaine

In addition to its literal meaning, it comes from an album of songs composed when lang was in love with a married woman. I think she's also saying, I can't believe I've become this person who is so undone by another, and by love in general, that a simple smile can mean so much.
@ac_arsenal ✅ It must have felt strange yet gratifying on some level for lang to be embraced in 1988 by Chatelaine magazine, then a bastion of mainstream straight female Canadian identity that she'd been trying to get away from. The background you give makes the song even more perfect, as no matter the sexuality of lang's married love interest, it must have been bemusing and confusing to find herself so attracted to a mainstream type of person with a lifestyle so unlike hers. How perfectly "I can't explain why I become Miss Chatelaine" sums up how we're not as in control of...

Plus Ben Mink was an amazing co-writer for her, wish they'd write another album together.

She refers to the song during a CBC interview when the album was celebrating its 25th anniversary. https://youtu.be/SuKfPqwitKk?feature=shared

Have you seen the video? I was confused a second Was that really KD.? I’m a straight older lady and seeing her all “girly” was odd to me. \n Like she was in drag. Lol \nWhat an incredible talent. I love her just how she is…. No wearing girly stuff ok??
@wise111829 She did it on purpose. To show how bizarre she found winning the title of Miss Chatelaine in 1988. I'm a straight 40 year old woman and I thought/think she looked good. Yes, odd, compared to how we are used to seeing her look, but good. I'm glad it was only for the video and I an award ceremony in 1985

@wise111829 The weird thing is, as a straight older male, the video also made me see it as a drag act, given her usual image. Came here having just seen what I initially thought was a very strange video. I have this CD, but got it late, tracking back from All You Can Eat. I never saw the video at the time. It is a very romantic song of fresh love. I admire her sensual romanticism which anyone can relate to.

God I love this song, Not sure I fully understand it, I used to think it said "My Cheverolet" which wouldn't even make sence. Great song though, gotta love it.

KD Lang, Canada's most prominent subversive lesbian singer from Calgary, well-known for being tomboyish and, while she definetly has style, hardly a beacon of contemporary fashion, was declared Miss Chatelaine in 1988. (Chatelaine being a Canadian women's magazine.) The song's literal: Why on Earth did she win Miss Chatelaine? Only her hairdresser knows for sure.

Chatelaine is a lady of the castle in French. It is also a famous wine growing domain.
I can find no evidence to suggest that Ms Lang was Ms Chatelaine in 1988.
So, is she saying I don't know why I have become a soak? (Drunk), "Every time your eyes meet mine Clouds of qualm Burst into sunshine" That is certainly what happens when an alcoholic has a drink. Not for me to say that KD has any association with drink, those that know her better than I will know that.
Just that the lyrics certainly don't match to the idea that she is confused about why she got the awarded a title of Ms Chatelaine.
@MMFB2001 It mentions on her Wikipedia page (under the categories Career Rise as well as Grammy Awards and mainstream success) that she was awarded as Miss Chatelaine in 1988.

As for the lyrics not matching the idea that she's confused about being awarded the title: "I can't explain why I've become Miss Chatelaine" is k.d. confused?!? Yeah, a lot of the lyrics don't have anything to do with the magazine but the chorus does.
