I took a ride to meet an enemy
October light show bright through the windshield
Right into my eyes where I was silent riding shotgun
Chewing on some sugar free gum
Parallel park and pay the meter
'If I die before I leave tell her
I'll never leave her
I am just fine
I am just a little broken up
OK my nerves have never been so short
Can't get this shit off my mind
I just want to be alright
So tell her nothing's wrong
Then get undressed and spend the night
The autumn sun is burning logic in my brain
I'm asking why there is pleasure when there's pain
I'm here to pay for my mistakes in a humiliating manner
If there is a next time I'll cover up
I feel alone, I feel shaky and uncertian
A kind man shakes my hand and draws the curtain
In a word he saves my life and then
I exit out the enter door and smile
Can't get this shit off my mind
I just want to be alright
So just tell me nothing's wrong
Then get undressed and spend the night
I took a ride to meet an enemy
I faced a fear of mine and shivered but didn't blink
I took a ride to meet an enemy to end all the madness
And now I know that I'll be fine
I am fine
Can't get this shit off my mind
And I just want to be alright
So just tell me nothing's wrong
Then get undressed and spend the night
Just want to be fine

General CommentThis song is nothing short of genius, as most of Max Collins songs are. This one has an Elvis Costello-double-layered feeling to it. It appears to be about some guy facing his fears, but when you really read it and realize its about a guy going to get an HIV test, the it all makes sense. "if there is a next time, ill cover up."--gotta love that.

General CommentIt has to be the AIDS test. There's no other way.

General Commenthe wrote this song after he was tested for AIDS - obviously everything worked out fine

"I took a ride to meet an enemy to end all the madness
And now I know that I'll be fine
    I am fine "

General CommentI never realised this before I came on here, but the HIV/AIDS thing comes out so obviously when I think about it! I thought it was just a guy with some problems and he wanted his girlfriend to tell him it was all alright and accept him for what he is and treat him like nothing's changed (spend the night), but now I spose all this could be applied to the HIV meaning too! Unless I knew that the guy who wrote this tested negative for HIV and it was all alright, I wouldn't have been able to tell. 'I am fine' could mean he'd come to terms with it.

General Commentit doesn't necessarily have to be HIV, though in this context it probably was... when I was in college, I thought I was pregnant. As I walked to the free clinic, thinking of how badly I might have screwed myself over with stupid behaviour, and how much I wanted a hug, and worrying about the choices I might have to make, I had this CD on, and though I had never really listened to this song carefully before, the meaning suddenly jumped up and attacked me. So, it really works for any STD (or pregnancy)... any trouble you can get yourself into with stupid sexual behaviour. (Needless to say I did not do anything so retarded again.)

General Commenti remember one night when i was up listening to horrorscope (complete coincident) and i got a text from my friend that said, "is enemy about going to get an STD test?"

what i think its about is this guy whos completely paranoid that he's gotten an STD. he wants his girlfriend to assure him shes not about to give him anything ("So just tell me nothing's wrong. Then get undressed and spend the night")

so finally he cant handle not knowing, so he decides to go check it out and realizes he's safe ("And now I know that I'll be fine, I am fine")

My InterpretationI always thought it was about doing something wrong, then anticipating the punishment you'll get later.
