"My Friends" as written by Anthony Kiedis, Chad Smith, David Navarro and Michael 'flea' Balzary....
My friends are so depressed
I feel the question
Of your loneliness
Confide, 'cause I'll be on your side
You know I will, you know I will

Ex girlfriend called me up
Alone and desperate
On the prison phone
They want, to give her seven years
For being sad

I love all of you
Hurt by the cold
So hard and lonely too
When you don't know yourself

My friends are so distressed
And standing on
The brink of emptiness
No words, I know of to express
This emptiness

I love all of you
Hurt by the cold
So hard and lonely too
When you don't know yourself

Imagine me taught by tragedy
Release is peace
I heard a little girl
And what she said
Was something beautiful
To give, your love
No matter what
Yeah, what she said

I love all of you
Hurt by the cold
So hard and lonely too
When you don't know yourself

General CommentI read a essay Anthony wrote on his heroes, and he said that his greatest hero is a 9 year old girl he saw on televison who won a dancing contest. She was sexually abused and beaten by her father, but when they asked her what she learned from her experiences she just said-

'To forgive and endlessly give your love to all those around you no matter what happens'

Thats what the last line in the song means.... beautiful isn't it?

General CommentThis song always makes me cry. A few months ago my best friend was raped. When she told me I didn't know what to say to her so i got my guitar and sang this song. It was my way of telling her we love her and will always be there for her.

General CommentOf all the songs in the Chili Peppers catalog, this may very well be my favorite. Who can't relate to this song in some way? As for it's meaning, I've heard a few different stories. One is Anthony Kiedis was in a hotel room while on tour watching TV and he came across a talent show featuring young kids. One of the little girls in the talent show had a rough story. She had been abused by a family member, but had not let it break her spirit. She said "to give your love no matter what." That's where the lyric in the song originates from. As for the rest? I've heard Anthony wrote it as a kind of "pat on the back" to friend and bandmate Flea, whom was going through a rough divorce at the time. But those two theories aside, I think the overall message is pretty clear. When you have people in your life that are looking out for you and are there when you need them, you're golden. Everyone needs a shoulder to cry on at one point or another.

General CommentI Find a connection between this and all of the Red Hots other anti drug songs. Not only does it lyrically refrence knock me down, ( which was about losing Slovak to an OD0, but I think this songmay be about losing john to heroin and such, and how AK and the other Peppers will be "there for him" and stuff.
My thoughts aside this a magnificent song. Very mealonchoaly and pretty

General CommentI really responded to: ex girlfriend called me up alone and desperate on the prison phone. they want to give her seven years for being sad.
That part seems to speak to relationships that you may have ended but you are still there for one another in crisis.
It also talks to the unfortunate trend of society to blame or try to punish people simple being unhappy. I adore this group!

My InterpretationThis song is one of my favorite songs by the Chili Peppers.

My interpretation of it is this:
This band is part of generation x. They don't know where their going or where they've been. They're just there. Empty and alone because no one really knows, not even themselves.

It's about a generation gone arye and even though they were all going through something different all they had was each other. It's like the wave crashin on the shore after it peaks. Or a calm after a storm. That's what this song means to me at least.

General CommentSorry people you are all way off base. Kind of. "I love all of you hurt by the cold" is implying the sickness that the people in the rooms of alcoholics anonymous and narcotics anonymous refer to as the spiritual malady or "disease" or sickness. The song is aimed mostly at flea because he was going through a tough time. So hard and lonely to when you don't know yourself is the same thing just telling how hard it is when you have not made that discovery of who you are or what you are lacking which is your higher power or spiritual self. And he's not talking about just his inner circle he's talking about everyone sick with this disease. he even talks about sharing. all kinds of recovery stuff in this song. Even at the very first is the want to give her seven years for being sad, "drugs". Get it good now I have to go write music later fabricator
