Everything Was Beautiful, and Nothing Hurt Lyrics

Everything was beautiful, and nothing hurt.

"As we melt let's make no noise
oh the profanation of our love
to tell the world our passing joys!
And we, besides, care less to miss
our eyes and lips and hands."

(but honey, I'm not who you think I am!)

"And so you'll be to me
who must obliquely run
"thy firmness makes my circle just,
and makes me end where I begun"
There's nothing wrong
as I'll be somewhere singing all along."

(no! tell me, where have you gone, my love.)

For those of you who can't make out what he's whispering at the start, he says, "If only you call for me, if only you die for me, saw you burn for me, if only you call for me." Also, if you notice, the line, "Everything was beautiful, and nothing hurt" is repeated twice before the initial line that leads into the verse.

mewithoutYou is really inspiring.

Again, the mumbling at the end? I can make out something like.. ".. forever, and I don't even know what that means."

Hey niceandblue2, i don't think that line is what they had in mind, BUT that would make a good forethought for a song of your own. I think you're on to something.

This song puts me back at college, on a slow winter night when I walked the quad, and stared at the sky. It was cloudy and was distinctly reddened by the street lights. I was repeating this song in my mind, forgeting all the people that were so much need, and the classes and shows i was in that all went to some conclusion that had no point. I forgot the people crying at home, the people i missed from years ago. Reflecting the sky, with my eyes, I messed up Aaron's lyrics, saying: "Oh, I know you You came to me It because of you That I am free of all that you had done for me I know that you Dye-ied for me."

I pulled my sweater closer to me and bowed my head, singing the song again for good measure. The pavement would get darker as I squint my eyes, hoping that tears can be turned aside that easily. And then my mind, ever the musician, picked up the beat with the alien voice saying, "Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt."

I was thrown into the future, my place near the kingdom of God. I was next in line at the white judgment seat and Aaron was already before God, yelling in whatever English sounding language he speaks in, shouting irrepressible joys at the mere mention of the sight of his Lord. The line behind us can't understand if he's yelling vulgarities to the most high or screaming for forgiveness which he'll never recieve. But Aaron knew, and God knew, and Jesus knew, and the angels knew, and Mike knew, and Richard knew, and Christopher knew, and some other people knew, and I knew. And when Aaron and I started to dance, we all knew.

That's when found my self in front of the door, outside the dorm. And that's when i knew when everything was beautiful and nothing hurt.

quiet poison, this band is incredible. If you haven't heard them, they're post-hardcore-ish. Very intense, with rambled/spoken/emotional vocals. I suggest buying the cd, its one of the best I own. YOu can find it at toothandnail.com. :) They also carry the cd at many christian music/book stores. If not, you may be able to find an mp3 somewhere, but I haven't seen any.

mewithoutYou is my favorite band and this is probably my favorite mewithoutYou song. In an interview Aaron Weiss explained he was inspired by a great poem by John Donne called 'A Validiction: Forbidding Mourning'

" It's about...It's based on a poem by John Donne called 'A Validiction: Forbidding Mourning', and its about John Donne writing to his wife as he was going away on a trip and was telling his wife as she remained home, I think he was a preacher. And he was travelling around for some reason or another. He was just telling her, you know, that this seperation of ours, you know, the bodily seperation can't seperate our souls and God will be watching over us while we're apart. And especially I suppose for a married couple its different, I mean when the Bible says the two flesh become one, it has perhaps more significance than me writing it to my girlfriend you know, but it is written about my ex-girlfriend Amanda at a time when I wasn't just going away on a trip. We split up but I thought it was appropriate nonetheless that, I mean theres a line, my favourite image, I mean I quote it in the lyrics, it's taken straight from the poem, the line is like, 'thy firmness makes my circle just, and makes me end where I begun'. It's a metaphor of a compass, you know, used to draw circles, that sort of a compass. He compares himself to like the pencil point that circles around, and his wife as the fixed, like the fixed metal point of it. And so as he travels around, like, she stays put but kinda leans out after him as he travels around as a compass would, and its just such a moving image to me, and of course, he's an amazing poet. So I just stole the idea straight from that, and I just changed the words and added my own, and just made it, I guess, appropriate to what I was going through, but boy oh boy thats my favourite song too. And then the music, I mean the bass and the guitar work and everything..."-Aaron Weiss

I really like this band but it's kind of annoying that Aaron Weiss says this is based on John Donne's poem when the title is taken directly from Kurt Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse Five." (It was on a tombstone in the novel.) The compass part is correct from the older poem, but the title is not based on Donne's work at all. It is word for word from another work. I get that this is a religious band and Vonnegut was notoriously and at times extremely cynical about religion, so maybe that's why he just chose to credit the Christian poet, not...
