Windy Lyrics
Calling a name that's lighter than air
Who's bending down to give me a rainbow
Everyone knows it's Windy
Smiling at everybody she sees
Who's reaching out to capture a moment
Everyone knows it's Windy
That flash at the sound of lies
And Windy has wings to fly
Above the clouds, above the clouds
Smiling at everybody she sees
Who's reaching out to capture a moment
Everyone knows it's Windy

This song is so catchy and upbeat, all right, that it is easy to not realize it was written about a drug dealer. Take another good look at the lyrics...to hand me a "rainbow"... tripping down the streets of the city...wings to fly above the clouds. Like Along Comes Mary, and so many songs of the time, the the lyric has a hidden meaning, covered by the upbeat tune and beautiful harmonies. It had to be hidden to get away with it then, unlike today.
@jadesfire001 I think you're right about the drug reference. 'Tripping (trippin') down the streets of the city.' And 'smiling at everybody she sees' ....so obviously high! What a great song with the harmonies n' all.

the girl who wrote it was Ruthann Friedman. She won't say exactly who the song is about but she will say this "I have heard so many different permutations of what the song was about. Here is the TRUTH. I was sitting on my bed - the apartment on the first floor of David Crosby's house in Beverly Glenn - and there was a fellow who came to visit and was sitting there staring at me as if he was going to suck the life out of me. So I started to fantasize about what kind of a guy I would like to be with, and that was Windy - a guy (fantasy). The song took about 20 minutes to write." Not bad for a third of an hours work! Obviously when The Association recorded the song they changed the he references to she references.

never heard this song before in my life, but it impressed me so much after binge watching breaking bad, i HAD to look it up! the person that came up with this song and that scene is a genius!!!!!!

This song is so catchy and upbeat, it's ridiculous. The harmony makes it sound awesome. I always thought it was "ba ba ba baaaaaa...BA BA BA BAAAAAAAA" but anyway. I love how you don't have to interpret the lyrics for a change. what an awesome song...oh the catchiness...

Damn, that makes sense unless this chick is an utter klutz and ditz, which is unlikely. Whatever, Bill Hicks said it best about drugs: "If you think drugs should be illegal, why don't you go home and burn all your albums."
This is why I love modern music. Without the occasional toke, most musicianship would likely suck.

For all of you who came here because of Breaking Bad...those lyrics are spot on for that segment.
For those of you who didn't see, the segment which followed around a hooker performing her tricks and getting high.
I knew when I saw it the lyrics fit cause I have loved this song for decades. But I didn't realize how spot on until I read them closely.

Yes! The first time I had ever heard this song was on Breaking Bad and I love it! Every time I hear it, I think of a hooker because it is soo perfect. "Bending down to give me a rainbow..." Love it.

I used to kinda dislike this song, dismissing it as bubble gum type babbling. Too gay (old school happy) to warrant listening to. Then I heard the song in a different way inspired by an episode of breaking bad. They played this song in the show while showing a prostitute. I just thought it was a funny song to play during those scenes but then the song was playing on my friend's iPod and I listened to the words. I think Windy is a prostitute, on drugs. She walks the streets smiling at everybody, she bends down to give a rainbow, which you can figure out what I'm suggesting here. Everyone knows her. She has wings to fly, probably a drug reference. I like the addition of stormy eyes that flash at the sound of lies. She sounds very real, it's an interesting addition.

I suppose it could be about a prostitute as commenters have said above. but it could also be about a free-love hippy chick from the 60s.
