It was Labor Day weekend I was seventeen
I bought a Coke and some gasoline
And I drove out to the County Fair
When I saw her for the first time
She was standing there in the ticket line
And it all started right then and there
Oh a sailor's sky made a perfect sunset
And that's a day I'll never forget

I had a barbecue stain on my white t-shirt
She was killing me in that mini-skirt
Skippin' rocks on the river by the railroad tracks
She had a sun tan line and red lipstick
I worked so hard for that first kiss
And a heart don't forget something like that

Well it was five years later on a south-bound plane
I was headed down to New Orleans
To meet some friends of mine for the Mardi Gras
When I heard a voice from the past
Coming from a few rows back
and when I looked I couldn't believe just what I saw

She said "I bet you don't remember me"
And I said "only every other memory"

I had a barbecue stain on my white t-shirt
You were killing me in that mini-skirt
Skippin' rocks on the river by the railroad tracks

You had a sun tan line and red lipstick
I worked so hard for that first kiss
And a heart don't forget something like that

Like an old photograph
Time can make a feeling fade
But the memory of the first love
Never fades away

I had a barbecue stain on my white t-shirt
She was killing me in that mini-skirt
Skippin' rocks on the river by the railroad tracks

She had a sun tan line and red lipstick
I worked so hard for that first kiss
And a heart don't forget, no a heart don't forget
I said a heart don't forget something like that
Oh, not something like that

General Comment this song is def bout a girl he met one day and he was positive it was love @ first, and i believe it was his first love and thats y he remebers her later in life, because she made such an impression in his life, and he obviosuly remebers the good old days chillin w/ her and how wonderful she looked, i think hes tryin to tell the listener that ur heart doesn't forget true love even if ur mind wants to, because love conquers all

General Comment*sigh* this was one of the first Tim McGraw songs I ever heard...way back in 6th grade. I remember then my friend and I used to make fun of it, b/c it was (*gasp* GOD FORBID!) country music, but secretly I liked it. I didn't want to tell her this or she would be making fun of *me* instead of the song. 5 years later and Im going to a Tim McGraw concert in less than a month! mwa ha ha.

General Commenti agree, this is why i love country music as well. growing up in iowa, i can appreciate this. we would drive around in big-hick trucks with the windows down, blaring songs like this one. it was amazing.

MemoryHmmm..This song makes me feel nostalgic. It's amazing how we never forget that "one love."

No matter how much we'd like our minds to forget that one person, our heart never seems to give us that ability to forget. :) I kind of like it....

General CommentThis is one of his best in my opinion.
It reminds me of when I was a kid, driving out to my Dad's in the country and he'd play Tim McGraw and teach my little sisters and I the words to all his songs.
This song is so sweet I think pretty much everyone rremembers 17 as being one of the best years of your life and the innocence of first love. That was only last year for me but I still miss it.
Can't wait to see Tim later this year when he comes Down Under to Oz!! Hooray!!!

General CommentLike an old photograph, time can make a feeling fade
But the memory of the first love never fades away

Probably the best lyrics of that song. Now in the song, it seems that he's remembering a past love fondly, and while my ex was basically a b****, that feeling of love itself I had for her is what makes me happy when I think about that time in my life.
