The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
I see but only what is shown
I cry but only when I' m torn
I lie but the truth is just the same
I die but my heart still feels pain
The day after forever is still today
I look into eternity left with nothing to say
Emptiness everywhere but sometimes joy
Why is my heart used as a toy
I' m caught only when I' m wrong
I lose even when I win
I think but the thoughts are never there
I run from everything cause I' m scared
The day after forever is still today
I look into eternity left with nothing to say
Emptiness everywhere but sometimes joy
Why is my heart used as a toy
My life is disrupted never being the same
I try to do things but they come out the other way
Good things I attempt are misunderstood
So people judge me as a troublemaker
I don' t know what to do about what people say
But I found my happiness so I don' t care anyway
I cry but only when I' m torn
I lie but the truth is just the same
I die but my heart still feels pain
The day after forever is still today
I look into eternity left with nothing to say
Emptiness everywhere but sometimes joy
Why is my heart used as a toy
I' m caught only when I' m wrong
I lose even when I win
I think but the thoughts are never there
I run from everything cause I' m scared
The day after forever is still today
I look into eternity left with nothing to say
Emptiness everywhere but sometimes joy
Why is my heart used as a toy
My life is disrupted never being the same
I try to do things but they come out the other way
Good things I attempt are misunderstood
So people judge me as a troublemaker
I don' t know what to do about what people say
But I found my happiness so I don' t care anyway
