Savory Lyrics

hey angel
consider
your position
framed to be consumed
savory
savoring your sympathy

hey angel
fly over
and bless me
see you feign surprise
that i'm all eyes
and you're all you
need to be
need to be

hey angel
whatever
position
we consider fit
to put you in
you'll protest your
complicity

easy now

one hand will wash the other
one hand will wash the other

This is definitely about the objectification of women. The speaker in this song is a guy who is exploiting a girl (he has power over her, as seen when he says "consider your position"). And even though he very obviously remarks on her physical appearance and the effect she has on people ("see you feign surprise/that I'm all eyes/and you're all you"), he attempts to make her feel just as guilty ("one hand will wash the other", or "you'll protest your complicity").

This could also be about using sex as a product. While the woman here is being objectified and seemingly sold as product, the speaker implies that she knew this beforehand and she's just as guilty as he is for this outcome. While the song definitely explores thoughts on the objectification of women, it also deals with the guilt in living in such a culture and contributing to it.

From the de Soto FYOSS vinyl re-release lyrics sheet:

After the "one hand will wash the other" there's another short verse:

"Hey angel fly over and bless me see you feign surprise that I'm all eyes and we're all we need to be easy now.

One hand will wash the other One hand will wash the other."

Now that I think of it, "one hand will wash the other" could also mean something like "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours", or that he'll do her a favor if she'll do him a sexual one.

I always thought the song was about a couple who either was on the way to breaking up or already had and having some post break up sex.

Hey angel, consider your position (her position being she wants to break up) Afraid to be consumed (doesn't want to get carried away) Savory Savory, your sympathy (her sympathy for him is what wins over

Hey angel, fly over and bless me See you feign surprise (Now here is where my dirty mind sees And I'm all eyes her (gasp of surprise) as he's all eyes ie: And you're all you need to be going down on her

Hey angel, whatever position (can mean sexual position or emotional We consider fit to put you in she's protesting yet complying with what Your protest, your complicity is happening.

I don't see objectification of women, more so the opposite. She knows she has him right where she wants to.

This is one of my favorite songs, brings me right back to my freshman year in college!

My Interpretation

not to defame/reduce or detract from what a classic and great song this is, but doesn't it seem like these lyrics could be about mutual oral sex or ménage à trois? my mind is not always in the gutter , but i've long noticed the possible connotation.

I thought the song was about objectification of women, but I could be wrong.
