I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Gypsy, sittin' lookin' pretty
A broken rose with laughin' eyes
You're a mystery, always runnin' wild
Like a child without a home
You're always searching, searching for a feeling
That it's easy come and easy go
Oh I'm sorry but it's true
You're bringin' on the heartache
Takin' all the best of me, oh can't you see
You got the best of me, oh can't you see
You're bringin' on the heartbreak
Bringin' on the heartache
You're bringin' on the heartbreak
Bringin' on the heartache
Can't you see
You're such a secret, misty eyed and shady
Lady how you hold the key
Oh you're like a candle, your flame slowly fadin'
Burnin' out and burnin' me
Can't you see
Just try and say to you
You're bringin' on the heartache
Takin' all the best of me, oh can't you see
You got the best of me, oh can't you see
You're bringin' on the heartbreak
Bringin' on the heartache
You're bringin' on the heartbreak
Bringin' on the heartache
Can't you see, can't you see
No no no
You got the best of me, oh can't you see
You got the best of me, oh can't you see
You're bringin' on the heartbreak
Bringin' on the heartache
You're bringin' on the heartbreak
Bringin' on the heartache
You're bringin' on the heartbreak
Bringin' on the heartache
You're bringin' on the heartbreak
A broken rose with laughin' eyes
You're a mystery, always runnin' wild
Like a child without a home
You're always searching, searching for a feeling
That it's easy come and easy go
Oh I'm sorry but it's true
You're bringin' on the heartache
Takin' all the best of me, oh can't you see
You got the best of me, oh can't you see
You're bringin' on the heartbreak
Bringin' on the heartache
You're bringin' on the heartbreak
Bringin' on the heartache
Can't you see
You're such a secret, misty eyed and shady

I Can't Go To Sleep

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
don't hate mimi, i think she did a pretty good job with the cover, infact she got it RIGHT, the feeling is there. I love this song.
One of Def Leppard's best ballads. The way it blends into the next song, "Switch 625", on the album, "High N Dry", kicks ass.
Great song....I love how the guitars fit the song perfectly especially at the beginning
One of the best Ballads ive ever listened to. But not even close to being thier best song.
This is an amazing song. It made me sick when Mariah Carey covered it. Ugh. This is one their best early songs, IMO.
yeah that cover was bad....but anyways awesome song...
This is about a chick who is draining the guy. And it seems he is doing his best to make it work, but it isn't good enough for her. She's always looking for something more.
"I'm sorry, but it's true ... you're bringing on the heartache."
Does this mean she is bringing him heartache or she is bringing it upon herself for not seeing ("Can't you see ...") that he's giving her his best?
It's difficult for me to ascertain, now that I think about it, if this song is about a guy who's being drained by the relationship or a girl who's ruining the relationship on her own by pushing him away.
She's "like a candle," burning him and burning out at the same time. So, she's hurting her guy with the self-destructive behavior.
What do all of you think?
Well yes this song is a totally a classic; strong melody, phenomenal harmonies, just awesome...and apart from some of you I thought Mariah Carey's version ain't that bad for a hip-hop mix! She made it her own and I like that.
This is an all time classic ballad, and it sucks that Mariah had to ruin it. god some people should not do covers damn it!
It's funny you should say that Jason, cuz in the new Def Leppard album, Joe comments on mariah doing it that "Mariah Carey has also covered it... and about bloody time! It took 21 years for someone to do a proper cover of one of our songs. Apparently she was listening to "Vault" when she decided to go back into the studio and add it to her own already finished album. Because 'Bringin' on the Heartbreak' is the final track it suggests she listened right through to the end. That makes it hard to not say. God Bless Ya Girl" Lol but dats just joe's comments, I love this song ay, sux how they re did the video, tho the original was soo bad, I reckon this song is about sum1 hu's been through a real rough experience wit a girl, and now shes hurting him after
