What if everything was...
What if everything was...
What if everything was...
What if everything was...
What if everything was...
What if everything was...
What if everything was...
What if everything was...

What if everything you had
was like a castle made of sand?
Would you open up your hand or hold on tight?
And what if everything was wrong?
And no one knew your favorite song?
There's no one left to sing along with you tonight.

Everything is alright,
i will see you tonight.
Everything you want is in your hands.
And i can't help you decide
the battles you fight inside.
And what hurts you, you don't understand.
And it feels like there's nothing right
And its all the same to you anyway.

What if everything you had
was like a castle made of sand?
Would you open up your hand or hold on tight?
And what if everything was wrong?
And no one knew your favorite song?
There's no one left to sing along with you tonight.

And that place you wish for
is just ouside your front door.
still it never seemed so far away.
Summer gave no reward
though this day was due for.
You wait to feel the sunlight on your face.
And it feels like there's nothing right
And its all the same to you anyway.

What if everything you had
was like a castle made of sand?
Would you open up your hand or hold on tight?
And what if everything was wrong?
And no one knew your favorite song?
There's no one left to sing along with you tonight.

You never know what to say,
so you run and hide away
i see your shadow falling in the summer sun.
So you never know what to say,
doesn't matter anyway.
You're here this time, you'll feel this time.

And if everything you had
wass like castle made of sand,
would you open up your heart and hold on tight?
And if everything was wrong,
I would sing your favorite song
And you would have to sing along with me tonight.
Sing along with me tonight
Sing along with me tonight

What if everything was wrong and no one knew your favorite song?

This song is so great… “What if everything you had was like a castle made of sand? Would you open up your hand or hold on tight?” If you think about it, this line is the absolute greatest. When you go to a beach, you might want to try this out: holding onto sand too tight forces it out of the tiny cracks between your fingers, and opening up your hand while you have sand in it makes the sand fall out. Either way you lose the sand. So if everything you had were to be made up of sand, wouldn’t it all be lost eventually? Haven’t all castles that have been made, crumbled. Does anything last forever?

“There's no one left to sing along with you tonight.” When everything crumbles, when everything ends, who will still be there for you? Who will help you remember what went right after everything’s gone wrong?

“Everything is alright, I will see you tonight. Everything you want is in your hands.” A this point, the singer is basically saying that he will help you remember the goodness in the world when it seems that it has vanished. That he’ll find you and make you realize that everything you’ve always wanted, is what you always had.

“And I can't help you decide the battles you fight inside. And what hurts you, you don't understand.” Now the singer is saying that no matter what happens, you have to realize that you make your own decisions. When things don’t go how you planned or how you wanted them to, it confuses you because pain isn’t something you want to feel. Things ending in pain isn’t how it was planned.

“And it feels like there's nothing right and it’s all the same to you anyway.” This line really shows you that even though things seem as though they aren’t right, it’s as right as they can be. Because no matter what, you will always feel the way you feel inside, and no matter what good comes in the world, you’re always going to feel the same.

“And that place you wish for is just outside your front door. Still, it never seemed so far away.” Now it goes back to the point that everything you ever wanted, is what you’ve always had. And it’s taken losing that [thing that you never knew you always wanted] to realize that it was what you wanted from the start.

And at the end of the song, the whole light/dark comparison I find pretty strong. How you wait for the sun [light] to come and make things better, but how even when the sun is out, all you let people see is your shadow [dark].

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
