    At first I thought this song was about a woman who had played a guy who had been a player but he started to fall in love with her but I've changed my mind. I find this song very romanic, possibly one of the most romantic love songs, this man is pouring his heart out to this woman for the first time and the song is exactly what he says to her. I think this is a song about a man who's capable of anything, he's very James Bond like but that also means that he has a lot of characteristics which he isn't so proud of, he lies, he manipulates, he has a way with women and men alike, and he can be cold hearted in the process but this time he has met one woman who has really effected him. This woman loves him and he realizes that he needs her and he needs her love. Despite everything he's capable of he needs her, she's his one weakness and he doesn't understand how she can love a person like him as much as she does, he is in awe of it, she's stolen his heart. She's a totally different creature than he is making love out of nothing at all, she follows her heart while he follows his head. This is the night he's decided to reveal his feelings to her... And I know the night is fading, And I know that times gonna fly; And Im never gonna tell you everything Ive got to tell you, But I know Ive got to give it a try

    For me, this lyric is about a man who is powerful, usually knows a lot, can do a lot, not only professionally, but also regarding his own life, feelings and relationships (he controls everything), but he is somehow intrigued by this woman who seems to make love (create and instigate love) out of nothing (spontaneously), not with premeditated actions like he is used to do. She simply loves. And this fascinates him, makes him feel vulnerable, powerless and, consequently, he loves her deeply.

    I've always been perplexed by the title of this song, but now the way I hear it is sort of along the lines of that the person he's singing to is unable or unwilling to commit further, so what they have is "nothing at all" compared to what it could be. He doesn't understand why they're willing to compromise themselves or their happiness like that, whereas he's willing to put it on the line. And he can do all kinds fancy maneuvers in the relationship with aplomb, but in the end, he can't force them to take the risk if they don't want to or don't believe they deserve it. I don't know...I could be way off. I used to think he was saying he could go through the motions of a relationship like a pro, but in the end, he couldn't force himself to fall in love, but now I don't think so. Anyway, whatever it means, the lyrics are really cool and Jim Steinman sure can write and produce the hell out of a love ballad. Also, sort of a different sound for Air Supply, but it works. The song was originally written for Meat Loaf, who would have been powerhouse, but theres something really haunting about the Air Supply vocals that just makes the song.

    Ok so I used to think this song was about an unrequited love and it kinda is but after watching the video and reading the lyrics again here's what it is. This dude completely loves this girl and can't live without her and wants her to go on the road with him. She doesn't support him, she won't go and tells him that she's not going to be there when he comes back. He's saying she's all these things to him and can't find a way to leave her but won't give up his own dreams. He's just in complete shock that she claims to love him but is willing to throw it away. He's saying I don't get how you can “make love” (not just to have sex) and say she loves him but leave him so easily and treat their relationship like its nothing at all. So in the beginning he's saying he knows all the right things to do to get her sympathy, attention, how to physically love her, he knows how to make it big in life but doesn't know how to get her to stay with him and their last night together is make or break it scenario and his final plea. So she's everything to him and she's just around him when it's convenient for her.

    My Interpretation
    To me, this song is the ultimate irony. The speaker is capable of a wide range of talents, some desirable and others more questionable, even manipulative. He is totally engrossed by this woman and feels all his abilities are nothing unless he can share them with her. Yet despite all these "gifts" which apparently have given him the proverbial fame and fortune, he is unable to move an emotionally superficial woman who goes through the motions of love, but never has a real depth or sharing of self that is so associated with sincere love or, to use yet one more cliche', "meaningful relationship." What a waste! A poetic person so capable of self-honesty and completely devoted to an uncaring woman. It's Petrarch and Laura all over again--constantly yearning for the untouchable and unreachable ideal.

    i'm in lov with this song. it has the sweetest and most beautiful words. my favorite is "and every star in the sky is taking aim at your eyes like a spotlight," whatever girl he wrote this song for, she's a very lucky girl. if only everyone could find love like this.

    i definately agree with barefoot...personally, i've always thought this song highlights the concept of creating love in oneself toward someone, from nothing at all. as if the guy didn't give the girl any reason to love him, yet she still does...but looking at the lyrics, it could also be that he has built all this love for her, and she says she loves him too but he realises she doesn't really have reasons to feel that way..i've related to this song from both ends of the spectrum, but even wen i've been in neither side, its still the best air supply song ever!!!!!!

    different take on this. he is not telling her he is using her. it is a plea to win her heart. he knows every spot, every breath. her world is his world. and he so wants to be with her. but she does not feel the same. she is making love, 'out of nothing at all'.

    I was listening to this song on a road trip and we were trying to figure out the meaning of this song. After three or four times in a row- we determined that the song is about how much he loves his significant other. In the begining he names all different types of characteristics he has that are not always good qualities to have- "I know just how to whisper, and I know just how to cry; I know just where to find the answers; and I know just how to lie. I know just how to fake it, and I know just how to scheme; I know just when to face the truth, and then I know just when to dream. And I know just where to touch you, and I know just what to prove;" He says he will never leave her- and he can't because he needs her and adores her, hence the rays of the sun and spot light bit. He loves her because she made him love- when he was nothing at all. He does so many things like lie- and he has the ability to please the fans, but he doesn't know how she loves him so much- almost like he is not worthy of her love.

    Some good comments here. This is a great song. After thinking about this, what this song means to me is about the enigma and power of love the writer is experiencing in a relationship. This is hinted all over the song, like in this passage: "And I know the roads to riches, and I know the ways to fame; I know all the rules and then I know how to break 'em and I always know the name of the game. But I don't know how to leave you, and I'll never let you fall; and I don't know how you do it, making love out of nothing at all" Then to emphasize this subtle theme in the song, he continues similar comparisons and his frustration of not having any control, or even understanding of it. And as great as he is, solving, mastering, controlling so much that required such hard work and skills, but he can't control or even understand and is powerless by such a basic thing that SHE created so naturally and so easily and effortlessly. To me, it's not about infidelity, as the title or how people would use the phrase normally. It is about the power of an emotion we have all felt in our hearts in our lives at one point or another. This subtle deeper meaning makes the song more interesting and contributed a lot to its incredible success with Air Supply, their most popular song by far.

This song is Swift's response to the negative reputation the media has given her. "I can make the bad guys good for a weekend" - the bad guys are the paparazzi to Swift, but are good to the "player" since association with Swift immediately gives publicity. Any publicity is good publicity and Swift knows this. "You can tell me when it's over" - the tabloids rumor relationships are over before the couple announces it officially. With this song Swift is portraying the way she is portrayed by the media. It is a sarcastic jab at how she views herself and how her "ex-lovers" only wanted to be with her to increase their fame. I applaud the brilliance in writing about how you always write about relationships. It is expected so Swift is giving the media what they want and profiting off the attention.

I believe this is another amazingly on point and nuanced commentary on the insanity that follows emotionally abusive relationships. The abuser has no anxieties, no emotional pain, or salience/memory for that matter, so the survivor appears to be the crazy one, obsessed with the abuse and that buzzword that seems to ignite arguments about diagnosing people without a degree, etc. funny how you say the words domestic violence, abuse, abuse survivor and boom the subject changes. Anyways, I especially relate to her midnights becoming afternoons, complex PTSD often leads to this phenomenon, whether due to purposeful sleep deprivation by the abuser, or just hyper vigilance associated with the PTSD, along with the fear of facing people, especially your loved ones, who Never actually understand, even if they try, because all they see is you, on fire, screaming about the arsonist that no one ever sees, and who has been spreading lies about your alleged mental instability, deceptive personality, etc. the whole time. While the last thing survivors need is more blame, our society supports a narrative that blames the objectively innocent party because the blatantly guilty party has spent their entire lives fabricating a persona and we’re just being human, and human psychology is quite counterintuitive especially in the context of trauma. Look at Amber Heard. Vilified and not believed, regardless of what any abuse survivor could recognize as a fellow survivor instantly. But Johnny depp is a malignant narcissist, a man, and wealthy as all get out. It’s sick.

The man has pseudo-friends who constantly criticize his actions. They moralize him, "teach" him and advise him to make a significant change in his life, because the way he is and what he does is not what they say it should be. They may find his life lame or immoral. They hold themselves up as role models. The man replies that he will make his own choices and decisions and he does not agree to unconditionally make himself under the influence of questionable quality advice. He justifies this by saying that there is always someone for whom he will be important, no matter what he does and no matter what he is. Although it is not said directly, I read it as meaning that he will always be important to himself in every way and he will always have his own support. "Everyone is different and maybe that's a good thing, but you exceeded that mark 1000 times" - I remember very well how sad the words I once heard (from my peers and it was in negative context) at school made me feel.
