Mind, of destructive taste
I choose...to stroll amongst the waste
That was your heart
Lost in the dark
Call off the chase

Walls of thought, strong and high
As my castle crumbles with time...
I think of you
Oh, yes I do
Such a crime

You opened fire...and your mark was true
You opened fire...aim my smilin' skull at you
You opened fire...
I live tomorrow, you I'll not follow
As you wallow in a sea of sorrow

Lines cut across my face
Why you laugh at my disgrace
I'll never know
How far to go
To reach that place

You opened fire...and your mark was true
You opened fire...aim my smilin' skull at you
You opened fire...
I live tomorrow, you I'll not follow
As you wallow in a sea of sorrow

I think this song deals with a break up or coming to ones senses that they will no longer try with this particular girl. He's saying that he knew that she was trouble from the start "mind of destructive taste, i chose to walk amongst the waste that was your heart" but still got involved and was/is paying the price in pain. He's saying that its such a shame that a girl can get in his head and do that to him "as my castle crumbles with time...i think of you......such a crime." He says how she enjoys putting him through this kind of pain. "lines cut across my face, while you laugh at my discrace, i'll never know, how far to go, to reach that place" and how he cannot ever think of what to do to make it better. But, in the upside to this song, he gets back at her by just simply smiling at her when she argues and shows her that he wont be lead into her games any more "you opened fire....and your mark was true....aim my smilin skull at you....i live tomorrow.....you i'll not follow, as you wallow in a sea of sorrow" I have dealt with a few women like this. It was all about head games and nothing is better than pushing back when some psycho girl tries to get in your head. That is why such the long response to this song. I can relate 100%

Its about being like "Ay, fuck you buddy!" to someone who fucked you over and rising above them as they die trying to clean up the mess they made themselves, but you managed to avoid becase of that person

Dude, I think the glam was kind of a joke. They did the Man in the Box video, same album, no glam. It was just the theme of the video. Videos ARE meant to entertain, you know.

The lyrics to this song seem ironic when compared to some of AiC's other stuff.

sicman is right. but all women are like this. relationships are war. the way you lose is to fall for the other person - love is a mindfuck. in any relationship there is always one who is more into the other, and if the other person knows this, they can and generally do use it to their advantage... i reckon the writer realised this with a particular girl, gave up chasing her and lives tomorrow even tho maybe he once thought he wouldn't. The smiling skull is him, emotionally dead, killed by this. The castle of thought is the time and effort put into fabricating a grandiose dream of them together. I think "that place" is success with her, and he doesn't know how much he has to do to get there. Ironically, its how little he does that counts. he was going about her the wrong way; thinking of her, caring about her was a crime. the way to win in a relationship is to be on top. its a love song. a great one. an ode to the real meaning of love.

@Kahiara Actually I think the husband passed away, "She sang for you last night She heard you were calling" Many people say they have felt, heard, or seen their loved ones after they have passed. "Don't be scared now Close your eyes She holds guard tonight Go on forward no remorse Life will take it's course" This is said to the late husband by a third part (never named), who encourages him to pass on. Because life will eventually continue. The phrase "holds guard" refers to the ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/… ) which is a Christian ceremony held after someone dies. Now it is usually held right after the funeral, but in most celtiic countries the wake is held before the funeral. "She danced with you last night so you will remember All you have shared, a lifetime." This sentence feels as if the only thing it wants to convey is their history together, namely, husband and wife. For the rest it just refers back to the first verse.
