I know where you go when you want to fall
Why do you want to be broken?
I know where you go when you want to fall
Yes your friends they tell me everything

Yes I know where you go
Yes I know what you do
Yes I know the awful things you say and who you say them to
Yes I know where you go
Yes I know what you do

I know how you feel, you get crazy inside
They say it runs in the family
I know just how you feel when you get crazy inside
Your mom she said that you are just like me

I can see it in your eyes
I can see your shaky hands
Yes I think you think I'm stupid
You don't think I understand
Yes I see you and I see myself when I was a younger man

When you were a child
You were happy and free
You were my reason to live
I would die when you smiled at me

I can still see you
I remember you painting
Sunflowers in your room

I know where you go when you want to fall
Hey don't you want to be happy?
I know where you go when you want to fall
Your useless friends, they tell me everything

Everything
I see you run around in circles
I see you digging your own hole
I see you fight the fights you just can't win
I see you losing self control
What it does to me deep down inside I hope you will never know

When you were a child
You were happy and free
You were my reason to live
I would die when you smiled at me

I can still see you
Painting flowers on the wall
I remember you happy
I remember it all
All I want to remember
Pretty pictures on the wall
I remember you happy
I remember it all
All I want to remember
Sunflowers in your room

This song is about a father seeing his daughter making the same mistakes he did. Even though he sees her screwing up and wants to stop her, he can't make himslef believe that it's true. He knows, but prefers to see her as the little girl she used to be. He doesn't know how to confront his daughter, but knows he has to before she ruins her life.

i see this as a 'you're just like me, and with that information i know you'll screw up' type song, and it's tearing art up inside because he wants his daughter (or whoever this is coming from; an older sibling to a younger, a parent to a child, etc.) to not make the same mistakes he did and to be happier as a child, because they're the best years of your life

This is one of my favorite songs too... But I don't necessarily think it's about a father looking at a daughter.. though that makes sense... If so, it probably still isn't about Art's daughter, she's too young... But it could be a guy singing about any sort or person... a friend that they've known a long time and sort of separated from... That's always been my take on it. Anybody remembering someone who use to be happy and how they aren't anymore.

well it does mentioning remembering the subject of the song being a child young enough to be painting sunflowers.. so i would assume it was about somones son / daughter, doesn't have to be his own though.. i mean it could be from another persons perspective, or fearing what his daughter might become, or even about a niece or nephew..

It sounds to me like a guy saying to his son you don't think i understand how you feel like your going crazy and stuff but i was just like you.

I always imagined it as an uncle talking to his niece.

Matt Shadows their lead singer says the song was written as per request from the developers of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Watching the initial trailers for the game & looking at production sketches reminded him of the 'S-Town' podcast & its main protagonist, John B. McLemore. Matt also comments specifically on the lyrics: "I decided that the lyrics would shadow McLemore's life." In 2012, antiquarian horologist John B. McLemore sent an email to the staff of the show 'This American Life' asking them to investigate an alleged murder in his hometown of Woodstock, Alabama, a place McLemore claimed to despise. After a year of exchanging emails & several months of conversation with McLemore, producer Brian Reed traveled to Woodstock to investigate. Reed investigated the crime & eventually found that no such murder took place, though he struck up a friendship with the depressed but colorful character of McLemore. He recorded conversations with McLemore & other people in Woodstock. McLemore killed himself by drinking potassium cyanide on June 22, 2015 while the podcast was still in production. In the narrative of the podcast, this occurs at the end of the second episode; subsequent episodes deal with the fallout from McLemore's death while exploring more of McLemore's life & character.
