I've had a question that's been preying on my mind for some time
I won't be wagging my tail for one good reason
It has to be a crime

This dog house never was the place for me
Runner up and second best just ain't my pedigree
I was so happy, just the two of us
Until this alpha male
Turned up in the January sale

He won't love you
Like I love you
It won't be long now before that puppy goes astray
And what I like about this guy the most
He'd be my favourite lamp post
Devil take the hindmost

It's a shaggy kind of story
Would I tell you if I thought it was a lie?
But when the cat's away the mouse will play
I wouldn't dish around here
There's something fishy 'round here

I howl all night and I sleep all day
It takes more than biscuit, baby, to chase these blues away
I've got a long enough leash
I could almost hang myself
It's a dogs life loving you baby
But you love someone else
Now he's moved by basket
I'd like to put him in a casket
I'll wear my best collar to his funeral

To have found this perfect life
And a perfect love so strong
Well there can't be nothing worse
Than a perfect love gone wrong

You said I wasn't just your Christmas toy
I'd always be your boy
I'd be your faithful companion
And I would follow you through every thick and thin
Don't need nobody else
And we don't need him

General CommentAlpha male? Is that what you are, Al?
    Couldn't you tell?
Actually, no. Love is blind and my, weren't you impossible?!
    Oh yes ... still am.
Yikes. Like I wanted to hear that!

General Commenta translation of the first French stanza:

I know it's hard, but you have to get used to change, you see
I neglected the fundamentals for too long believe me
I know, I can see you're suffering, but this will lessen in time
I need a man, not a dog, close to me
Stop growling, my choice is made and that's it
Don't overdo it, your attitude might move us apart
You've got to understand, given you say you love me so much
Now we are three, him, you and me

General CommentAgain, I am taken aback. Apparently the French is the girl's part and gee, should I change my middle name to blasé? What an attitude I have! Did I allude to something like this?!
That's the problem. Who can trust you?! Neither one of us can. You're always too willing to play the jolly jokester with both of us.
If the tables were turned, either one of you would too.
I believe it. I understand you were in his face. You were in MY face bigtime. But I'm looking for an analogy here. I think he's forgetting how his success has the ability to make anyone else feel like they're getting the bum's rush. I have no regrets.
    Oh stop.

General CommentA translation of the second French stanza:
Your bad attitude, I'd really like it to stop
Getting rid of you, today that's running through my head
No, you're just a dog, this is too stupid
Even though the situation appeared so clear to me
It's clear, I love him and that's a fact, your selfishness worries me
After all these nights we spent alone, you and me
Everything must end, and it's the end
For you, as soon, there will only be him and me, him and me

General Commentcould this be one of those "we're exorcizing some old demons" kind of thing? Some of it I can relate to and some of it I get lost in. Did I ever insinuate that he was selfish?
Someone might wonder when this all went on ...
It did and it didn't. It was something and nothing. It was weird, frustrating and amusing head games.
    That influenced the music.
Oh maybe yes, maybe no. Hard to say. That he was peeved at times, I can believe. I certainly was at times. Didn't seem to like you ...
YOU could have zapped me clear past Pluto numerous times if I wasn't so quick to weedle my way back into your good graces.
Yes, I know. Not that I didn't have ample reason each and every time ....

    General CommentJ’ai perdu mon chemin.
L’auteur du livre est une bijouterie!
    Je regarde tout simplement …
    J’ai des vertiges.
Est-ce que cette place est occupée?

    C’est une histoire d’amour.
    Le plaisir est partagé.

General CommentQ: You use passages of French texts in your new album, in 'Perfect Love Gone Wrong', just like you had done in 'Mercury Falling' with 'La Belle Dame Sans Regret'. Was that a concession to commercial?

Maybe. On that song I sing from the perspective of a dog. I love my owner but she has a boyfriend and I'm terribly jealous. I try to express my jealousy but she doesn't understand. She gets angry and starts shouting at me, in French. I don't understand her, there's a communication problem, so the two languages allow me to express that.

    General CommentParaphrased poetry

The brave boy of the town
    Feeling unsteady—hot …
To the envy of everyone—I shout
    Shoot it out!
    … to the blind accordionist.
And what kind of woman is this one
    Walking in freezing weather?
The whole of France could not afford this woman!
    Understand that—you streets!

This street war is to be beautiful.
    This street war is love.

    A sudden Christmas
I am without a friend and without family.
I am familiar to no one
Who or what I am—troubles no one.

In a lighted shed, this woman, in a tank,
    Diving for hearts
    I am unable to clap
    I am frightened—I say frightened
At being pimped and pestered by a child

She is gone, my splendid dog—so good at everything
What a pity it is, you don’t drink.

General CommentAs I love dogs, I just gotta love the song! : )
I adore Sting for picking up this sad topic of a dog becoming unimportant and singing it from the dog's point of view!

This paragraph for example is perfectly sad and touching:

I howl all night and I sleep all day
It takes more than a biscuit, baby, to chase these blues away
I've got a long enough leash
    I could almost hang myself
    It's a dog's life loving you baby

What confused me when I first listened to the song and what I find quite funny is that even Sting's dog seems to have attitude. *g* It's quite unusual for a dog to say things like:

    - I'll wear my best collar to his funeral
    - Runner up and second best just ain't my pedigree

: D Don't get me wrong, I still love these lines from a lyrical point of view!
