    I feel that this song is about how she gave someone her heart and everything she had(as in her trust) and that person turned around and just threw it all away..This song is really sad and i've been through this before.. And I just want to say RIP Aaliyah..

    i just got the album "One in a million",it was a bit of a dissappointment,but my fav songs r "If yr girl only knew" 4pg letter and my fav that i can listen 2 over and over again 16x straight!! "The 1 i gav my heart 2" its totally wicked!!!!!!! :) Rest in peace Babygirl:)

    These lyrics could not possibly sum up my feelings more at the moment - sofar, I've listened to it on repeat about 600 times, and I'm still not sick of it. It's such a beautiful song.

    THis song is what im going through right now. im wondering why my boyfriend dumped me because he was the one that treated me like a queen and always made me happy and somehow he changed and just wasnt like that anymore and he took his"i love you" back? i mean who does that but its a nice song i love singing it. and pretty much amazing

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.
