This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
Sooner or later we¹ll meet the maker
It doesn¹t matter to me
Cos I¹ll be laughing while I¹m packing
They¹ll have to drag me away
I¹ve been around I¹ve been inside out
I¹ve seen it all before
I¹ve had my share of lady luck
Knocking at my door
Chorus
I¹d give it all away
I¹d give it all away
Just for one more day
One more day with you
If you ever see the devil
You gotta tell him from me
I got an angel a little angel
Living right here with me
I¹ve been across and I¹ve been to the edge
I¹ve seen it all before
I¹ve had my share of lady luck
Knocking at my door
Chorus
It doesn¹t matter to me
Cos I¹ll be laughing while I¹m packing
They¹ll have to drag me away
I¹ve been around I¹ve been inside out
I¹ve seen it all before
I¹ve had my share of lady luck
Knocking at my door
Chorus
I¹d give it all away
I¹d give it all away
Just for one more day
One more day with you
If you ever see the devil
You gotta tell him from me
I got an angel a little angel
Living right here with me
I¹ve been across and I¹ve been to the edge
I¹ve seen it all before
I¹ve had my share of lady luck
Knocking at my door
Chorus
