It was long ago, it seems like yesterday
Saw you standing in the rain
Then I heard you say

I want to love, but it comes out wrong
I want to live, but I don't belong
I close my eyes and I see blood and roses

Wild flowers in the springtime
October we were wed
In winter time the roses died
Her blood ran cold and then she said

I want to love, but it comes out wrong
I want to live, but I don't belong
I close my eyes and I see blood and roses

It was long ago, it seems like yesterday
I saw you standing in the rain
Then I heard you say

I need your love, but it comes out wrong
I tried to live, but I don't belong
I close my eyes and I see blood and roses
Blood and roses (roses)
Blood and roses (roses)
Blood and roses (roses)

I agree (sigh). Not only how the Smithereens, much like Bruce Springsteen, better represents New Jersey's finest music--I too saw all those toxic waste sites, chemical treatments plants, et. al., as a kid when my dad drove our family down to Trenton to tie up loose ends before we all flew to Rota, Spain, where my dad was stationed for a few yrs. while serving out his 20 yrs. in the Navy circa 1974. BTW, I've got a joke for you: This guy and his gal were passionately making out so much the gal cries out, "Oh Baby, kiss me where it smells!" So he takes her to New Jersey...hehehe

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
