Up All Night (Frankie Miller Goes to Hollywood) Lyrics

Is everybody happy now?
Is everybody clear?
We could drive out to the dunes tonight,
'Cause summer's almost here.
And I've been up all night,
I might sleep all day.
Get your dreams just right
And let them slip away,
I might sleep all day.
And when the roads are clear,
We'll head on out of here,
And then be coming back to you every morning,
I'm just staring at
The ceiling staring back at me,
Just waiting for daylight to come crawling in on me...
And I've been up all night,
I might sleep all day. Get your dreams just right And let them slip away, I might sleep all day. Ohhh...It's too late to get high now. Ohhh...It's too late to get high now. So, fix your hair just right Put your jeans on tight, Wear a dress, so I can get it off real easy. 'Cause I've been thinking I'd Like to see your eyes Open up real wide the minute that you see me. But if you don't come through, I wouldn't wait for you. I understand that everyone goes disappearing, Into the greatest grey That covers over everyday, and hovers in the distance and the distance and the distance... I've been up all night, I might sleep all day. Get your dreams just right And let them slip away, I might sleep all day. Ohh...It's too late to get high now. Baby I'm not (alone?), Na na na na na na....

At the Counting Crows concert tonight, Adam introduced this song by saying that it's about trying to get over something, but not being able to. And then realizing that after a while you're so messed up over it and it doesn't even matter anymore and now you're left all messed up and you just have to move on.

o0MyCatharsis0o, it's not a song about drugs though, he's just saying that it's too late to get high.

The greatest line in the world:

"Get your dreams just right and let them slip away.."

Adam Duritz is a lyrical genius.

Here's where Adam discusses the meaning from their website:

"This guy doesn't have connections to other people. He's imagining a place where there was this camaraderie, where everything was cool and obvious. But he can't get there. The last verse says, 'If you don't come through, I wouldn't wait for you. I understand that everyone goes disappearing into that greater gray.' He's talking about a specific person, but also about everybody. You can't depend on other people. He dreams about it, he wants to do it, but he keeps letting them go. He doesn't grab onto anything; it's partly his own fault." The chorus seems almost to celebrate that "it's too late to get high." "I'm past the point in my life where I'm going to be able to solve my problems by getting high. There's a point where it's fun, then there's a point where it ain't gonna do you any good anymore. It's too late for that to be any kind of an answer. It's too late for all of those things that are going to make you feel good for a moment, whether it's getting high or stepping off the end of the world or calling a girl in the middle of the night or staring at photographs. It does mean you don't wish it would work."

i work the midnight shift during at work during the summer, so the chorus fits just right :).

i like to intepret it as being about staying up all night, unable to sleep, because you're thinking of a unattainable love...and wondering.

although i'm pretty sure the actualy meaning is different.

The lyrics are decent, but the music is what makes this song. The way it complements his singing and accents the powerful parts is great. This would be great acoustic with a guitar and a bongo drum.

I know this is probablly not what the song is about, but it makes me think of growing up. I'm 20 and sometimes after staying up all night with my friends (getting high) I think of how much things have changed just in the last year and it scares me to think about what it will be like 5 years from now, beings that right now everyone is going off to college or whatever else...it's almost like watching your dreams fade in front of your eyes when you watch people you have grown up with leave for good, because you never thought it will actually happed. This song also makes me think of sex, just because of the dress part! (sorry...couldn;t leave my message all sad) Plus IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO GET HIGH (unless you are being drug tested)

I think this is by far the best song the crows ever released. It makes me sad and happy at the same time. We are too old and we are too young.
