Once again I wake up alone on the wrong side of the bed
And once again you begin your dancing nakedly on the right side of my head
It’s for a lack of better words that I can hardly speak my soul
And I’m feeling what I’m feeling when I’m feeling
When it’s time to lose control, my love

And once again we’re off to war
But I can’t agree with what we’re fighting for
And that’s not all, because every time she smiles
I see her soul, and I smile
What a wonderful life

It’s true I used to try, but then I gave up
I learned it doesn’t really matter
What I do ain’t enough to appease or to please
All my well meaning deeds seem to all go up in smoke
And every time I look into these smoke filled skies
I wonder what she’s doing, why I volunteered to die
But tonight I will fight for my life
So I might see my wife again

I explained to her that I’d be back
And I gave my word that the fighting wouldn’t last
But despite my pact, I know
That every breath I draw might be my last
And I smile: It’s been a wonderful life

God damn, another summer in the city
And I never seen a girl look so pretty as you when you smile
Oh, you’re wild for a while
I was hoping I might see you again
And I know that everyone is willing to go
And I find I’ll turn it all and leave on a dime
If I leave tonight (screw what’s right)
I can make it home by dawn

And I was told “Boy, prepare for war,”
But they failed to mention what I’d be fighting for
So I fight for this: the fact that as I pass away
I’ll feel her kiss, and I’ll smile: what a wonderful life
Me oh my, what a wonderful life
Oh to die for such a wonderful life

this is a great song...its almost half sad, half happy... its sad in the way he's at war and all the points that everyone has said...but its also happy for how through all this bad, if he died he'd still consider it a wonderful life because of his love.

either way its a great great song...one of my favorite songs ever.

wow, this song is amazing...it makes me think of my friends and relatives in the military who are either in the middle east right now or will be soon. kinda sad, but its amazing how he really makes the best of his situation. quite a gift to always be able to look on the bright side of things.

I just love the feel of this song. I mean, obviously the words, too, but, its so good. I love the progression throughout the song regarding what he's fighting for: "They failed to mention what...", to "I can't agree with what...", to "So I fight for this..." I am in love with this song...

i really cant agree with you that this song is about looking on the bright side of things. if anything i think its about great regret about committing to something he wanted nothing to do with. especially when he has something so imporant back home. i think this is a song about how war not only destroys the big things, like momuments and housing...but also how it destroys love.

War destroys everything. Kalnoky, I can see, is strongly against war. Not only the fighting, but the idea that the military is the biggest form of conformity. Everybody is in uniform and no one is seperate from anyone else. No one is unique. He hates to leave everything he has that makes him the way he is to go fight for something he knows absolutely nothing about and turn into just another meat-shield for his seemingly useless fucking country. This, my friend, is not a happy song. On the contrary, it's quite a sad song. All he wants is to be home with his one and only love, his wife. For some reason, in this free country of ours, he can't do that.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
