Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
Beneath these restless waves
A vessel's in its place it lies
We forget and live our lives
A moment in a dream
Forever Child she speaks to me
She’s on her favourite ride
She missed one day from school
The bus pulled in the seats are full
And the ship is to arrive
Misjudged the time and speed
Ship hits the bridge catastrophy
And the bus now takes a dive
Tears Simone
She draws a tear and paints a picture with them
For she’s alone and all her fears are empty desks and long hallways
And everybody says, deal with the pain
Closer to the edge her friends don’t seem so far away
Flirting with the pain, needing a new dependency
A move to inner peace, she’s making up her mind
She’s standing on both feet
But this is not the day for flight
Freedom you suppose, is not over the edge
You have not lost the fight
Because the fight is not over yet
And she’s starting to work through the pain
Closer to the edge her friends don’t seem so far away
Flirting with the pain, needing a new dependency
A vessel's in its place it lies
We forget and live our lives
A moment in a dream
Forever Child she speaks to me
She’s on her favourite ride
She missed one day from school
The bus pulled in the seats are full
And the ship is to arrive
Misjudged the time and speed
Ship hits the bridge catastrophy
And the bus now takes a dive
Tears Simone
She draws a tear and paints a picture with them
For she’s alone and all her fears are empty desks and long hallways
And everybody says, deal with the pain
Closer to the edge her friends don’t seem so far away
Flirting with the pain, needing a new dependency
A move to inner peace, she’s making up her mind
She’s standing on both feet
But this is not the day for flight
Freedom you suppose, is not over the edge
You have not lost the fight
Because the fight is not over yet
And she’s starting to work through the pain
Closer to the edge her friends don’t seem so far away
Flirting with the pain, needing a new dependency

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.

Midnight
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Midnight” is a song about finding a love that is so true that it provides a calming feeling through every storm. Ed Sheeran reflects on his good fortunes in landing someone with such peace and support and speaks of not fearing the dark days because he knows they’ll all end in the safety nets of her arms.
“Well, good morning there / What a way to start the day / With everything laid bare,” Ed Sheeran sings in the first verse, enthusiastic to be waking up beside his woman. He apologizes for missing her calls in the second verse and promises to return them because for him, speaking to her is the most important thing. “Well, I get lost inside my head / In this chaos, you’re my calm / And I will find my feet again / ‘Cause еven the worst days of my life will always еnd / At midnight in your arms,” sings Ed Sheeran in the chorus, revelling in his good luck.

Somewhere Only We Know
Keane
Keane
Per the FAQ on Keane's website, Keane's drummer Richard Hughes, stated the following:
"We've been asked whether "Somewhere Only We Know" is about a specific place, and Tim has been saying that, for him, or us as individuals, it might be about a geographical space, or a feeling; it can mean something individual to each person, and they can interpret it to a memory of theirs... It's perhaps more of a theme rather than a specific message... Feelings that may be universal, without necessarily being totally specific to us, or a place, or a time..."
With the nostalgic sentiment and the overall tone of the song, I think Keane is attempting to express a Portuguese term known as 'saudade', which does not have a direct English translation but roughly means "that which we remember because it is gone."
this songs cool
i think this song is about a girl ( and yeh im only saying girl cuz it says girl but could relate it to a guy too) going through some problems and to her it seems some people are influencing her in a way to think suicide is the better option, but i in the end she takes a stand on her emotions and notices that she has people around her and she can make it......kinda yeh... thats just wat my 1st thought was about...
the whole bus trip might be a metaphore, but the story goes on to say how the bus crashed and all her mates died, and the empyiness at school now, makes her want to committ suicide, but "this is not the day for flight" best part is "she draws a tear and paints a picture with them" awesssssomee
When i 1st heard this song it described to me, a girl who has lost all her friends and the only way to feel free is to die. her life seems way too long and all she wants to do is find peace but no one understands how she feels
This Song was written by Andrew after speaking to a woman who suffered loss after the tragic accident on the Tasman Bridge in Hobart, Tasmania, when the ship SS Lake Illawara Collided with the bridge. a Bus carrying school kids drove straight over the edge, killing them. This song is about the girl who didnt go to school that day and what she has been through...her friends died in that disaster. it talks about how she feared going back to school and she was "flirting with the pain" of giving it all away, she felt like she had nothing more to life and she "needs a new dependancy". We asked Andrew himself.
wow that makes sense. what an amazing song aye.
oh yeah, i was also going to say that it's a good song for people to listen to if they feel depressed/suicidal. i love antiskeptic's lyrics they're so meaningful & inspirational ^.^
