And I Love You Lyrics
The people ask me how
How I've lived till now
I tell them I don't know
How lonely life has been
But life began again
The day you took my hand
And yes I know how lonely life can be
The shadows follow me
And the night won't set me free
But I don't let the evening get me down
Now that you're around me
Your thought are just for me
You set my spirit free
I'm happy that you do
And once a page is read
All but love is dead
That is my belief
And yes I know how loveless life can be
The shadows follow me
And the night won't set me free
But I won't let the evening bring me down
Now that you're around me
The people ask me how
How I've lived till now
I tell them - I don't know

This song is so sweet and yet very simple. It's about a man who was very lonely- until he meets this person. It talks about how he knows the harder things in life, but it also gives a message of hope <I guess they understand How lonely life has been But life began again The day you took my hand > It's saying that there is always a chance to improve life, and the importance love can have to a person. I like this song a lot, it's one of Don Mclean's better songs : )

One of my favorite songs.

my favorite song.. but perry como is way better..just makes me melt.. . listening to don mclean doing this makes me sad..

I think the pivotal line in this song is "the night won't set me free" I think that this describes an alcoholic or a chronic abuser of heroin, maybe, and they used to be able to live in this very well-defined state of comfortable unhappiness. They worked a shit job, but the night allowed them freedom, their drugs and their lifestyle. But when these resources proved to be enemies rather than friends, this person was forced to reconsider where they placed their faith, and right at the right time, they discovered somebody much like them, who was also searching. It's a song based on destiny, the polar opposite of the song "Dreidle" which is based on chance.
@TheThornBirds Congratulations! You have successfully projected your own feelings about addiction on to a song that really fails to support them. But what do you care?
