(Burn... burn... burn...)

So if I blaze a trail
Hammer the final nail
So if I shake you off my tail
How can I fail?

Down, pretty bridges burn, all my bridges burnt
Burnt down pretty bridges burn all my bridges burnt

Nausea the vertical climb
A fatal flaw in the design
I can't be sure that you'll open the door to me
The double indemnity

(Burn... burn... burn...)

A mouthful of pleasurable sensation
Shaken by sheer anticipation
Glad you asked me, I had to dash, you see
It's been a blast

(Burn)

All my bridges burn
All my pretty bridges burn
Each one in their turn
All my pretty bridges burn
Burn, pretty bridges burn
All my bridges burn
Will I ever learn?
Watch all my pretty bridges burn

Hysterical look at this chaos
All that I had and all that I lost
You are feeling sleepy
Very very sleepy

Down, pretty bridges burn, all my bridges burnt
Burnt down pretty bridges burn all my bridges burnt
Burnt down pretty bridges burn all my bridges burnt

As for the bitter taste
Let it vanish into the flames
Don't let it go to waste
All the places and the names
This is the master stroke
Raised to the ground
And it all goes up in smoke
All my bridges burn

All my bridges burn
All my pretty bridges burn
Each one in their turn
All my pretty bridges burn
Burn, pretty bridges burn
All my bridges burn
Will I ever learn?
Watch all my pretty bridges burn

Down, pretty bridges burn, all my bridges burnt
Burnt down pretty bridges burn all my bridges burnt [x3]

(Burn...)

All my bridges burn
All my pretty bridges burn
Each one in their turn
All my pretty bridges burn
Burn, pretty bridges burn
All my bridges burn
Will I ever learn?
Watch all my pretty bridges burn

(Burn... burn... burn...)

    My Interpretation

Everything that's been, things attached to you, still clinging onto you, bad memories, people you'd rather forget, things you've done - Always trying to shed the weight. Not keep carrying it around with you endlessly. It's a hard thing to let the past be. For me that's what this song is about.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
