House In The Woods Lyrics
See my little darlin'
I'm goin' down, out in the fields
With summertime comin'
What can I do but love you?
For the rest of my days, the rest of my nights
What can I do but love you?
Back by the power lines
I ain't got a neighbor for nine or ten miles
Back in the tall pines
What am I goin' to do but trust you?
The rest of my nights, the rest of my days
What can I do but love you?
What am I goin' to do but love you
For the rest of my days, the rest of my nights
What could I do but love you?

It's hard to say what this song is about. I think it's one of Tom Petty's best though. The music is just superb!

This song reminds me of the very beginning of summer; when summer is just about to break away from spring. I think it's about unrequited love and simpler times.

Hard to say what it's about? It's, like, about him and girl and stuff.

What's he going to do but make love with his girl, if he ain't got a neighbor for 9 or 10 miles, right? That's pretty much all this song really means.
The beauty in the song really is the instrumentation and the solos. The song is a bit tedious (some more improv and flourishes would make this song a killer track), but for some reason I can't get enough of it.
Oh and I thought it sounded more like a Heartbreakers song, not a Petty solo. Sure enough, in the album credits, it's Benmont Tench on piano an Mike Campbell on guitars. I guess that Tom petty is playing Petty royalty games with his band members, eh?
