I think he's saying that he knows there aren't any guarrantees that he won't get his heart broken again. . .and it's a long hard road. . .but he'd rather have the chance to put it on the line again. i think this song is about how his heart has been broken so many times, he always seems to do something wrong in a relationship "clean up my mistakes". he doesn't mean to, but something always goes wrong. he really loves the girl, but knows it's for the best that they break up because he made a mistake that will never make things the same again between them. he broke her heart by doing something wrong in their relationship and now it's his turn for her to break up with him, leaving him with another broken heart.
